I haven’t noticed any increase. Anyway, I haven’t been asked often for proof of identity except when translating for UN agencies and recently for a Scottish ONG.

I've had several clients do this as part of their due diligence. All of them mentioned bad experiences with connections made through Proz or similar sites that turned out to be scam artists.

I work with local direct clients only, so I welcome that more and more real businessmen (unlike middlemen and spongers) prefer talking and working with local freelancers.
Why, local companies do outsource some work too, but only via a local coordinator (PM) with a full responsibility claim in the contract. (On the QT: a very few dedicated specialists come and agree even for pretty big money.)

I haven't noticed it, but it would be a very good idea, beneficial for both parties, given the theft of CVs and other practices in the market. I wouldn't mind if all my clients asked for it, and I'd actually thank them for doing so.
