This is the name of a Spanish organization that looks for different legal and financial ways to help people who have been evicted for not being able to pay their mortgages. I had originally translated it as Victims of Mortgages Program (using one of the not so common meanings of plataforma, but certainly more apt for this context), but my client wants to avoid the use of the word "victim" at all costs. My next best solution is to translate it rather more literally: "Program for Those Affected by Mortgages" - which I'm not real crazy about (for what I think are obvious reasons).
Can anyone think of another noun that could work in place of "victims"? I thought of "sufferers of" or "scapegoats for", but am not really satisfied with those either.
BTW, looking for American English.
Or even another translation overall? I'm open to suggestions at this point!

Linda: I am not sure what you mean with your comment about "plataforma". Be that as it may, I will leave you with two options:

Linda: other ideas for "Plataforma" as it appears you are not comfortable with "Platform" (I had already provided "Movement" as an alternative), but in reading other links, other words such as "Assembly" arose.

http://www.cidob.org/publications/articulos/spain_in_focus/j...
The Plataforma de Afectados por la Hipoteca (PAH) emerged in 2009, when the disastrous effects of the housing bubble burst became apparent. Today, it is recognized by a vast majority of Spanish citizens (78% according to the latest polls) as the most valued grass-root organization in Spain –vastly over and above political parties. The PAH is certainly one of the most resolute social movements and civic platforms born out of the outrage at the PP-executed local cutbacks derived from the Troika-prescribed and Troika-monitored European austerity policies.
Origins, first actions and the Stop Evictions Campaign
The origins of the PAH, which appeared in 2009 in Barcelona, is the so-called **Movement for Decent Housing***, a group of social activists who had been denouncing the unsustainable situation of the housing sector since 2006, before a sudden contraction of demand (December 2007) caused the free-fall of housing prices. This heterogeneous movement demanding the enforcement of the right enshrined in Article 47 of the Spanish Constitution (“all Spaniards have the right to enjoy decent and adequate housing” ), drew the public’s attention to a number of negative circumstances: exorbitantly expensive housing, ramping speculation, high level of corruption related to real-estate transactions and urban development, the financial overstrain of first-home buyers, the huge stock of empty houses, and the meager supply of houses for rent.
The PAH, which was conceived as a non-partisan assembly movement, spread from Barcelona through a horizontal net to other cities and communities, so that in May 2013 the local platforms in Spain numbered 147. The PAH has responded to the rapid increase in judicial proceedings resulting in eviction by providing services to the affected citizens (the vast majority of them, unable to meet the payments on their mortgages due to the collapse of their income as a result of job losses) such as general and legal advice when dealing with banks. The purpose of this assistance is to prevent or delay as much as possible foreclosures through the courts, for they involve the auction of the foreclosed house to financial institutions, under very favourable conditions, and the subsequent eviction of the owners –who, in many cases, remain in debt after losing their homes.

Note from asker:
Thanks, this is very helpful! I still have my doubts about "Platform," as that seems to convey political connotations to me, and I suspect many of those translations may be no more "official translations" than mine will be: just the journalists' interpretations, so I don't feel obliged to necessarily follow their lead. But I do like the use of "Citizens," that actually fits perfectly with the overall tone & intent of the book I'm translating. |

Thanks James. I do too, but tried to find what I thought might be alternatives in view of the asker's reservations which incidentally, I don't necessarily agree with.

citizens affected by mortgages?
Just a suggestion: I think adding "citizens" instead of "those" might sound good and convey the spirit of the PAH.
As for "plataforma", I'm not sure which word might be good. What do you think about "association", "protest group" or "support group"?

Note from asker:
I like association because it is an official organization. That's a good idea I hadn't considered, thanks! I'd considered support group, but it doesn't sound "official" to me. And it's definitely not a protest group, so that's out. |

"movement" sounds right to me although I think it is not the same as PLATAFORMA in Spanish
According to dictionary.com, in English:
Platform:.the declared principles, aims, etc, of a political party, an organization, or an individual

Discussion
The identity of the Spaniard in question would be interesting.
The organization does indeed have a certain sway, but it is a protest group and has been repeatedly disqualified by the ruling PP as even having links with terrorism, their usual recourse "ante situaciones incómodas".
"I'd considered support group, but it doesn't sound "official" to me. And it's definitely not a protest group, so that's out."
This statement would surprise some 40 million Spaniards. It most definitely is a protest group (the most famous in Spain), whose powers of negotiation stem not from any "official" status, but the fact they "occupy" bank branches, go directly to the homes of politicians, organize resistance to evictions. Ask Ada Colau.
I like Taña's "movement" if you don't care for "platform".
"Program" is out. It implies something official which is not the case.
