Spanish term

a la replica

Spanish to English Other Education / Pedagogy Academic - Certificate
This term is found in a Mexican document certifying that the Master's student gave a presentation on her research work and then sat the exam presided over by various members of a panel. The degree is Master's in Ciencias en Biologia Experimental. The full sentence is:

El Jurado procedió a realizar el examen correspondiente: al sustentante quien hizo la presentacion de su trabajo de investigacion y enseguida se procedió a la replica con cada uno de los miembros del jurado de acuerdo con las disposiciones reglamentarias vigentes. Al concluir el examen, el XXXXX, en su character de Presidente del jurado, deliberó con los demas miembros de la mesa sinodal, sobre la capacidad del sustentante para recibir el grado propuesto, acordando: APROBADO POR UNANIMIDAD.

Thank You
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Yvonne Gallagher

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

...a la rÉplica... ...en su carácter...
Como bien dice Luis Vasquez, en un examen profesional para obtener un título universitario, los sinodales le hacen preguntas (duras) al candidato. Ignoro si hay un término específico en inglés.

defended their research/thesis

about to agree with Luis but think correct term here has to be "defended" and also do not agree that "candidates are normally questioned by a panel" everywhere for a Master's. In Mexico this appears to be the case but elsewhere it is "normal to defend a Ph.D but not always necessary to defend a Master's

=responded to/answered questions put to them by the panel

You haven't said target country so have a look here to see what is "normal" there

and then answered the questions....

During a professional exam to get a college degree, candidates are normally questioned by a panel. In this particular case, there was a presentation made by the candidate and then he/she answered questions.
Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : You can also say "defended it".
