Spanish term

liquidación

Spanish to English Bus/Financial Law (general) Financial Manual
Buenas noches,

Clearance

Nuevamente, agradezco todos sus aportes.

Discussion

Robert Carter Nov 2, 2020:
Hi Meridy, well yes, that in fact was my point, i.e., that you can't simply use "settlement" here, you need something like "form" or "claim form", etc. as well because it's meaningless by itself.
By the way, Manuel, I believe it was Phil Godard who suggested "claim form."

Guidelines for Completing the Travel Expense Settlement Form ...

While it may sound awkward "settlement" is widely used in US businesses. Of course "travel expense form" is perfectly understandable and gets the job done too.
Robert Carter Nov 2, 2020:
Hi Manual, yes, well I imagine there's some kind of shorthand going on here, i.e., they're using "liquidación", but what they really mean is a "solicitud de liquidación", so yes, a "claim form" would probably be the idea (putting in a claim for "liquidación" or payment/settlement). You definitely can't leave it as "settlement" in English because it's just confusing for an English speaker, IMO. "Settlement" sounds like the expenses have already been paid, which is clearly not the case here.
Manuel Aburto (asker) Nov 2, 2020:
Hi Robert,

Thank for your observation.

I remember that David said that they seemed to be talking about expenses claim forms.

Does it make more sense?
Robert Carter Nov 2, 2020:
I don't see how "liquidación" could in any way mean "payment" (settlement) here. It doesn't make the slightest bit of sense to me in the context given:

"**Liquidación** de adelanto de viáticos: es la generación y aprobación del formulario que liquida el adelanto de viáticos; y cuando corresponda, deberá presentar ante la Organización los comprobantes definidos en este procedimiento".

"**Payment** of per diem advance: means the generation and approval of the form..."

"Si la **liquidación** de adelanto de gastos no cumple con las especificaciones Finanzas la rechaza y es regresada al solicitante para que realice los ajustes pertinentes."

"If the **payment** of the per diem advance fails to meet with the specifications, Finance rejects it and it is returned to the applicant to make the relevant adjustments"

Eh?
Taña Dalglish Oct 31, 2020:
@ Phil Having worked with the UN for 15 years+ and having travelled with them, I know as a fact that "settlement", as in Case 1, does apply; the per diem is treated as an advance and settlement takes place after the fact, or at best reconciled, for instance, depending on where one travels to, a daily amount (e.g. US$180.00) exists to pay for hotel, food, etc.

I'm not sure "settlement" works here. As Manuel says, and based on the context, they seem to be talking about expenses claim forms, not payments.
Meridy Lippoldt Oct 31, 2020:
I favor the term settlement. It is based on past experience working in an office that processed a lot of travel settlements. I think you are on the right track.

Settlement ... why not?

Case 1:
- Per diem advance settlement ... This is the generation (creation) and approval of the form that settles the advance per diem;

Case 2:
- Settlement of expenses advance. If the xxxx does not meet specifications, Finance rejects it ....

Spanish term (edited): liquidación - de adelanto de gastos

assessment; calculation; account-taking - of an advance on expenses

Settlement, legalistically, is *exactly* the same > ask your High Street Solicitor > as payment: so 'settlement of a law firm's fee note' these days - pace UN and IATE usage - is the same in the UK as payment of the firm's 'bill of costs' of old.

Nine times out of ten for expenses vs. winding-up of a business, liquidar as Phil G. rightly hints at, means the taking of account/s/ and is a standard Professional Spanish Network translation.

So best take a note to avoid constant repetition of this question after half a century,
