The scientific name for sun dogs. Either of two colored luminous spots that appear at roughly 22 degrees on both sides of the sun at the same elevation. They are caused by the refraction of sunlight passing through ice crystals. They are most commonly seen during winter in the middle latitudes and are exclusively associated with cirriform clouds. They are also known as mock suns.

Los parhelios son fenómenos atmosféricos causado por la refracción de la luz del Sol (por tanto, también se pueden considerar un fenómeno de origen astronómico).

DEFINICIÓN: El fenómeno conocido como parhelio ("sun dog" en inglés) es un fenómeno óptico de común ocurrencia, asociado con la reflexión/refracción de la luz, producto de una gran cantidad de partículas de hielo en las nubes cirro. Muy parecidos a los halos (de hecho pueden y suelen suceder al mismo tiempo), se manifiestan como a 22º a la izquierda o derecha del sol como manchas brillantes y hasta coloridas en el cielo.
