In this case, the title refers to the head of a major French newspaper. I have seen this variously translated as "Editor", "Editorial Director" and even "Managing Director". I guess what I am looking for is really an understanding of how the functions differ, specifically in the context of a newspaper, as an editorial director in a publishing house is another role entirely.
Any journalists out there who may be able to enlighten me?

Managing Director doesn't usually have anything to do with editorial and often isn't a journalist. The directeur de la rédaction is a journalist.

...is another term I've come across, but I'm not a specialist in journalism and so don't know much about the niceties of distinction that are made.
