My main concern would be in relation to "defensor dativo". Is there a more specific term in the US Law or can I translate it
as a defense counsel appointed by law?

O primeiro é um profissional de carreira, nomeado após aprovação em concurso público, para a prestação de serviços jurídicos a pessoas que não podem custeá-los. O segundo é qualquer advogado registrado na OAB que for nomeado pelo juiz em um processo criminal para atuar (naquele processo apenas) em proveito de um acusado.

Ou poderia também usar o termo "COURT-APPOINTED ATTORNEY" que é o mesmo que "PUBLIC DEFENDER". :)

Ivan is right; a public defender is NOT the same as a "defensor dativo." While his suggestion is correct, another option would be to use the Latin term "ad litem," which means "for the purposes of the suit." (Black's Law Dictionary, eighth edition.)
