Some days ago, after fiddling around trying to stop a virus, Outlook suddenly decided that I had insufficient privileges to access my own Outlook.pst file, and refuses to open.
Any ideas on how to get around this?

Hi Peter,
I don't have an answer to your problem, but I would suggest to provide more info to raise the probability of finding a solution:

- Which version of Outlook?
- Which operating system?
- What is the exact error message displayed?

Have you tried searching the MS Knowledge Base for the error message?

Best, Ralf

Hello Peter,

did you install Windows XP's Service?

If yes here is a way to resolve the attachments' problem:

Choose Options from Outlook Express' Tools menu.
Click the Security Tab.
Click to remove the checkmark by the option called, "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus."
Click the OK button.
Close and restart Outlook Express, if necessary.

You could then save the attachments to your hard drive and scan them with a virus checker before opening them, so a to avoid another virus attack or simply open them, it's up to you.

I hope this helps.:-)

Have a nice day!
Lamprini

YOu are right, more details are needed.
XP Windows O.S.
Outlook 2002, S.P.2

The message states that I do not have sufficient privileges to access outlook.pst, and therefore cannot open Outlook.

Educated guesses:
- Your outlook.pst file may be corrupt - have you tried opening a backup copy?
- The file may be locked in WinXP; check the file properties for anything unusual (such as "read-only").
- Create a copy and try opening that. If that works, you can rename the original file (e.g. 'outlook.old' and change the name of the copy back to 'outlook.pst') later (remember to close Outlook before doing this).

HTH - Ralf
