The following is a paragraph which states Holmes' defintion of translation policy. I can't understand the paragraph at all. Can someone help me understand this paragraph? "Another area Holmes mentions is translation policy, where he sees the translation scholar advising on the place of translation in society, including what place, if any, it should occupy in the language teaching and learning curriculum." A translation scholar is a learned person with a professional academic interest in translation. The place of translation in the society is basically the importance of it, the applications etc. The author specifically mentions language teaching, for example, and translation used to be used as a tool in that. Thanks for your reply. Can you elaborate more? What does it mean that " a translation scholar advises on the place of translation in society?" To put it in a nut shell, does the whole paragraph refer to the importance of translators in the society? | | | Translatologist, sort of | Jul 20, 2013 |

To put it in a nut shell, does the whole paragraph refer to the importance of translators in the society? You could understand arabistics (which the dumbed-down grammar-averse modern world would refer to as 'Arab Studies') as the study of everything Arabic. That, however, is not unlike any other -logy. The same could be said of translation studies. Someone whose field of study is translation will possibly research not only the ways of doing translation (the methodology of translation) but also its effects and its place in the society (basically, the sociology of translation). | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Translation Policy Trados Studio 2022 Freelance | The leading translation software used by over 270,000 translators.
