An Austrian regional mayor talks about an issue affecting his region for an historical trail audio. I'm totally mystified by "Hofübernehmer" and can't find a translation for it anywhere. I think it roughly means people taking over their parents' farms, or taking over farms generally, but I don't know a neat way of saying this, and I need something neat, because this is supposed to be spoken text, so it has to be easy to say aloud. TIA for your assistance with this most obscure word.

Discussion

BrigitteHilgner Mar 14, 2007:
With Rowan: Young farmers who take over a farm, either from their father - then they have to pay their parents and siblings - or from somebody else.
Rowan Morrell (asker) Mar 14, 2007:
Young new farm owners Yeah, that sounds OK. Many thanks.
Rowan Morrell (asker) Mar 14, 2007:
New young farmers??? Not very keen on anything with "transferee", even though that is an entirely correct translation for "Übernehmer". But how many times would that word be spoken in conversation? I need something that rolls off the tongue easily. I'm wondering about "new young farmers". The "new" vaguely ties in with "Übernehmer", because if they're "new" farmers, they have presumably "taken over" or acquired a farm, either by buying it or inheriting it from their parents. But if that seems like too much of a departure from the source text, then by all means, please suggest an alternative, but remember it has to be something that works for spoken English, because it's going on an audio recording.

property transferee

It might work, although it's not very elegant.

how about "young new farm owners"

I agree, transferee is a pretty wretched word.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I ended up going with "young new farm owners", but Claire and Francis' suggestions were also good. Many thanks to everyone for your assistance with this tricky word."

paraphrase

I think I'd write round it. Maybe something along the lines of "many young people moving into farming for the first time or starting out in farming / taking up farming.

Just a thought...

farm heirs/inheritors

Perhaps a simplified version of the German - but it should be clear enough in your context. Plus it's conveniently short.
Apparently there's a distinction between "on-farm" and "off-farm" heirs.
