I don't believe it's X-Mode; however, it's not a binary choice between this and "economy mode" either.

"Schonmodus" is part of Subaru's SI-Drive System, e.g.:
"Der WRX ist wieder zurück. Er ist schluckfreudig wie eh und je, ausser man fährt ihn im Schonmodus I-Drive mit Katzenpfote."

Yes, it's the setting for fuel-efficient driving. Still, I think Lancashireman has a point. You may see that if you a) ask yourself why the author did not use "Sparmodus" instead and b) take a closer look at the second part of the sentence.

The point about a) is the length of the trip in I Drive - 3 kilometers. The writer didn't write "Sparmodus" because, no offense, touting a 3 km drive in economy mode borders on the ridiculous. Regarding b), the point is that the sentence reads "wieder normal weiter." What he or she means by "normal" is that the car reduces engine output while in I Drive, but not in S or S# Drive.

This is the part to focus on.

The Forester has both X-mode (off-road mode) and economy mode. There is no indication that schonmodus is likely to refer to the former (more likely X-mode/modus in German)

Lancashireman provided the best explanation with the link. The German word 'Schonmodus' is an approximation of what the link describes. The verb 'schonen' as in Schonmodus, basically means to go easy on something, reduce wear and tear.

I cannot find anything in the article that you have linked, which contradicts "economy mode", the suggestion that almost everyone seems to agree on. But thanks for the link anyway, I am sure it helps me to fine-tune my translation. ;-)
