Der Terminus stammt bekanntlich aus Luhmanns Systemtheorie. Dabei handelt es sich um einen irreversibel evolutionären Prozess in reflexiver Form: Etwas differenziert *sich* aus, nicht: Jemand differenziert zwischen A, B und C.
