Only that Landsmannschaft refers to the existance of countries etc. :)) If we were talking about indigenous cultures outside of what we call civilisation then I´d say maybe. But as said tribe has too much a connotation of indigenous people, colonialism and the lot. But Landsmannschaft is a European term presumably from a time when most "indigenous" tribes of Europe have already vanished or mixed, signifying the belonging of people to a geographically ( and thereby culturally ) defined region/country. It is a term generally only used when the need to discriminate arises e.g. when travelling or living away from the Heimat , etc. :)) Maybe Silvia could shed some light by listing other classifications from her text or table.

IMO, this would be a further stage in the development of a nation from clan structures. (BTW, it's Land S mannschaft).

BTW: if you are familiar with the Netherlands and Germany, the Frisians are an ideal example of a Landsmannschaft as a community or ethnic group that still remains relatively coherent and is represented in both countries. They elected "Häuptlinge" as "rulers/representatives" of the "Landesgemeinden" who gathered under the "Upstalsboom/Opstalboom" to speak law and mediate in conflicts.

I had a look at your authochton proposition which probably comes closest by definition but only within the realms of the Netherland. In English it has other connotations. Compatriot is closest to Landmann I believe. Apart from that it would be very interesting to know what year the text was written in to get more clues as to how to interprete the term and intention. Landmannschaft does not sound very "contemporary" German.

being from the same country generally means sharing the same culture though. The word Landmannschaft implies this /a cultural aspect through geographical and cultural origin at least. Otherwise they could have used Gemeinde.

Compatriot groups/compatriot associations are predominantly expat groups. Usually a kind of club where people of the same nationality can meet. They may be a social organisation, but they do not represent a social or cultural division or unit

Silvia, ich glaube nicht , daß es nur um die Größe der Gruppe geht sondern auch insbesondere um das soziale Gefüge. Einem Clan liegt ein gewisser Verwandtschaftsgrad zugrunde, wohingegen die Landmannschaft eine Verbundenheit über die geographische und kulturelle Herkunft in den Vordergrund stellt. Compatriot association ist weitverbreitet und beschreibt, daß die Gruppe organisiert ist.
Solltest Du es genereller bevorzugen wärst Du wie schon TonyTK sagt mit Deiner eigenen Formulierung gut aufgehoben.

Es sind definitiv NICHT die Landsmannschaften aus ostdeutschen Gebieten gemeint!!! Es geht ganz allgemein um eine Gruppe von Menschen - kleiner als eine Nation, aber größer als nur ein Clan.

If it is not in the context of immigrants or 'Vertriebene' and just meant as a stage between clan and nation, it could just mean 'regional' or 'people from same regional background'
