Hi, I've changed the date on the page to the correct time. I thought it was rather amusing that there is the option of setting the number of seconds for the Powwow, therefore I have unanimously decided that it will not start at 7:30 on the dot, but at 7:30 and 33 seconds, giving you time to translate at least an extra 5 words before you set off ;-)

Hi guys. I'm a translator brought up in York but now in Barcelona. Every time there's a Powwow in York I always think "if only it was at Christmas or in August I'd be able to come". Reading your comments from the last Powwow, quite a few of you said it should be a regular event. So I thought, why don't I organise one when I'm there.

Now I know some of you may be either away or busy at this time of year, but even if not everyone can show up, I still think a get-together would be worthwhile.
I return to Barcelona on the 6th January. If the 5th is not a good day for you then we can rearrange it, but for me it would have to be at an earlier date.
In theory I'm supposed to be going to the pantomime that day, and I was thinking we could combine it and go out for something to eat afterwards, with anyone who doesn't fancy going to the pantomime meeting up with us later. What do you reckon? I'm now having second thoughts about the idea, since the panto starts at 7.30pm, and I think with living in Barcelona I'm forgetting that "social" hours are not as late back home as they are here. Another option would be to meet up for "tea" beforehand, and then possibly have a pint somewhere afterwards. If not, I'll just scrap the idea of combining with the panto.
So, let me know what you think, and give me ideas of where to go. Remember that when I left York I was a poor student and all I could afford was a bag of chips with scraps, so you probably have more of a clue of good places to go out than I do. Maybe somewhere down near Stonegate or Swinegate or that area? ▲ Collapse

How would you feel if the date was moved to Thursday 4th? Two of you have told me you're going to the panto on other dates, so we could move it to the 4th and then have it at a better time, such as 8pm. What do you think?

Venue
Dec 12, 2006
OK, it looks like will change it for Thursday 4th. Now, what about the venue? My Dad has said Russell's does a nice carvery and not too expensive. Apparently there are two very nice restaurants near the Barbican. Anyone know them? Then there's the restaurant on Swinegate that used to be the Elim Church, though I think that's rather on the expensive side. Let me know any other ideas. I say us, as I'll have a Catalan friend over with me who's also a translator.
I'm thinking that sometime in the future we could have a joint Leeds/York powwow in somewhere like Tadcaster or Sherburn in Elmet. There's a very nice carvery pub in Sherburn, for example. ▲ Collapse

Another option
Dec 19, 2006
Another option is the Wetherby Whaler (the one on the ring-road, not the original one in Wetherby, though that would be an option for a future York-Leeds pow-wow), if you like that kind of food. If you've not been, it's not like the 70p chips you get at your local chippy. This is quality fish and chips. And if you're feeling very hungry, the Whaler (the name of the largest fish you can buy) will definitely fill you.

Wenke, any news on whether any of the YTI guys will join us? ▲ Collapse

I can tell that you are dying for some good old British fayre, Tim!! Wenke and I are veggie, I know that the Whetherby Whaler does 3 or 4 veggie main dishes and salad as an alternative to chips. I would be happy to go there (it's right near where I live) but I think city centre would be better as Yuko (and others maybe) will come by train from out of town. I generally prefer prefer "ethnic" food, there are some really nice places just near the station in George Hudson st - Thai, Turkish, Chinese, Indian . There is also a new Thai place up Mickelgate called Old Siam - I've never been but it is run by a Thai couple (friends of friends) and I have heard good things about it. Also only 5 mins from the station. I am happy to go anywhere really (as long as there is a veggie option) these are just a few ideas. What do other people think? ▲ Collapse

Food etc.
Dec 19, 2006
I am quite flexible in terms of town or out-of-town venue; however, I quite agree with Mary's comment of the venue being central to make it accessible to other people relying on public transport.
I quite like Mary's ethnic food options - haven't been for a Thai meal for ages...
Will circulate the powwow again to the YTI you've chosen the venue.
See you all soon!

time and place
Dec 19, 2006
I think it'd be a good idea to pick a definite time and place fairly soon and then we can circulate that around possible participants. I think people would be more inclinded to give a definate answer if the details were in place.

Shall we make it the Old Siam then?
Dec 19, 2006
Wenke sounds keen on Thai. I've eaten at a Chinese on George Hudson Street, but none of the other places, so I'm going on your recommendation. I don't think I've ever eaten Thai, so it would be nice to try it.
So here's my proposal:
Old Siam, 7.30pm, Thursday 4th January.
Does 7.30 sound right to you? I'm used to eating later now, but 7.30 seems to be about the time for an evening meal in the UK, or have I been away to long and I've forgotten? If we eat at this t... See more

If we eat at this time, we'll definitely have time for a drink in a pub after if we fancy it (hopefully it shouldn't be too rowdy in that part of town on a Thursday night, as most people should be back at work by then). ▲ Collapse

Please confirm
Dec 22, 2006
If you are definitely coming, please change your "maybe" to a confirm, so that Mary can make the booking. Mary, remember that I'm coming with a friend.
Remember, the Powwow is on the 4th, not the 5th as appears at the top of the page.
