Source text - English Main driver of relative performance was stock selection, which detracted most within the Communication Services sector. The portfolio’s position in satellite company SES, which belongs to the sector, was the most significant detractor over the course of March as the market started to price out a potential windfall profit from C-band in the US. Peer company Eutelsat was also down becoming the second largest negative contributor. Lower interest rates also made the overweight position in Financials and in particular the holdings in Scor and ING negative contributors to performance.
We have also decreased the exposure to Banks/Financials by selling out of Banco Santander. In turn, we have introduced a new position in Stora Enso, an integrated paper, packaging and forest products company from Finland. The company calls itself a “renewable materials company” and focusses on solutions based on wood and biomass for a range of industries and applications. We see Stora Enso as a structural winner because they offer more environmental friendly solutions in the consumer space than currently used materials. Going forward we like the structural shift in the company from a formerly highly cyclical paper business to a growth oriented, eco friendlier supplier of packaging and building materials. The business has high barriers of entry because of scale in production and resource access needed. At the same time the company replaces capacity by efficient high tech production sites which enables to follow customers fast changing needs. The remaining paper business is controlled by reducing capacity (together with other market participants) and channelling the resource to growth segments. The stock was under pressure because it is still seen as cyclical investment which the market tried to avoid.
Our key takeaway from the National Party Congress for the longer term market outlook is that financial re-form and liberalization will continue. China savers need a wider range of investment opportunities outside China to prevent liquidity bubbles in domestic asset classes, especially property. This is likely to mean more opening up of China’s capital markets to global investors. Early in November, the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) announced clarification of tax rates for foreign investors on their onshore bond investments.
In line with the continued opening-up of China’s onshore bond market, we will be repositioning the Fund henceforth (from end-November), to include investments in this third largest bond market in the world. Our initial investment focus will be high quality bonds with government linkages and which have better liquidity. These would include bonds issued by the Chinese Government, the Ministry of Finance, the PBoC, policy banks and central state-owned enterprises (SOE’s). The Fund may also invest selectively in high qual-ity negotiable certificates of deposits and commercial papers. The onshore credit/ corporate bond market is not well developed in terms of pricing, liquidity and ongoing monitoring of credit qualities. Given this, we do not plan to invest in this part of the market until we see further positive developments.

Der größte negative Ergebnisbeitrag geht hier auf den Satellitenbetreiber SES zurück, dessen Aktie im März unter die Räder kam, als der Markt mögliche Gewinne im Zusammenhang mit den für die neue 5G-Technologie genutzten C-Band-Frequenzen in den USA auspreiste. Dasselbe Schicksal erlitt unsere Position in Eutelsat (einem direkten Wettbewerber von SES), die den zweitgrößten negativen Ergebnisbeitrag beisteuerte. Niedrige Zinsen wirkten sich durch unsere Übergewichtung in Finanztitel – vor allem bei unseren Positionen in Scor und ING – ebenfalls nachteilig aus.
Daneben reduzierten wir durch Verkauf der Position in Banco Santander auch unser Engagement in Banken/Finanztitel. Im Gegenzug haben wir eine Position in Stora Enso aufgebaut, einem Anbieter von Papier-, Verpackungs- und Forstprodukten mit Hauptsitz in Finnland. Der Konzern bezeichnet sich selbst als „Unternehmen für nachwachsende Rohstoffe“ mit Fokus auf Materialien auf Basis von Holz und Biomasse für eine Vielzahl von Branchen und Anwendungen. Wir betrachten Stora Enso als strukturellen Gewinner, da die Produkte des Unternehmens den bislang im Konsumgüterbereich genutzten Materialien in puncto Nachhaltigkeit überlegen sind. Uns gefällt der zukunftsgerichtete strukturelle Wandel von Stora Enso: vom hochzyklischen Papiergeschäft der Vergangenheit zu einem wachstumsorientierten, ökologisch nachhaltigen Anbieter von Verpackungs- und Baumaterialien. Der Umfang der Geschäftsaktivitäten und der hierfür notwendige Zugang zu Ressourcen sorgen für hohe Eintrittsbarrieren. Gleichzeitig ersetzt das Unternehmen Kapazitäten mithilfe effizienter Hightech-Produktionsstandorte, um auf die sich rasch verändernden Kundenbedürfnisse reagieren zu können. Das verbleibende Papiergeschäft wird durch Abbau von Kapazitäten (im Gleichschritt mit anderen Marktteilnehmern) und Lenkung der Ressourcen auf Wachstumssegmente gesteuert. Die Aktie des Unternehmens geriet zuletzt unter Druck, da sie vom Markt nach wie vor als zyklisches Investment betrachtet und daher gemieden wurde.
Der für unseren längerfristigen Marktausblick wichtigste Punkt des 19. Parteitags der KPCh ist die Ankündigung, den Kurs der Finanzmarktreform und -liberalisierung fortzusetzen. Chinas Sparer benötigen ein größeres Spektrum von Anlagemöglichkeiten außerhalb des Landes, wodurch das Risiko von Liquiditätsblasen in heimischen Assetklassen, insbesondere bei Immobilien, verringert wird. Dies dürfte eine weitere Öffnung der chinesischen Kapitalmärkte für internationale Investoren implizieren. Anfang November kündigte die chinesische Zentralbank (PBoC) Änderungen in der Besteuerung von Onshore-Anleiheinvestments ausländischer Anleger an.
Mit der schrittweisen Öffnung des chinesischen Onshore-Anleihemarktes werden wir fortan (ab Ende November) eine Neupositionierung des Fonds vornehmen, um in diesen weltweit drittgrößten Anleihemarkt investieren zu können. Hierbei wird unser Anlageschwerpunkt auf qualitativ hochwertigen Anleihen staatlicher oder staatsnaher Emittenten liegen, die eine höhere Liquidität aufweisen. Hierzu zählen beispielsweise Anleihen der chinesischen Regierung, des Finanzministeriums, der PBoC, der drei Förderbanken (Policy Banks) des Landes sowie Schuldtitel staatlich kontrollierter Unternehmen (SOEs). Der Fonds kann darüber hinaus in ausgewählte umlauffähige Einlagenzertifikate (Certificates of Deposit) und Commercial Paper hoher Qualität investieren. Der Markt für Onshore-Unternehmensanleihen ist dagegen in puncto Preisstellung, Liquidität und laufender Überwachung der Bonität noch immer unterentwickelt. Wir planen daher, uns in diesem Marktsegment erst dann zu engagieren, wenn hier weitere positive Entwicklungen eintreten.

Source text - English As widely expected, in December the Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points to a range of 0.5% to 0.75%, citing a stronger economy and rising employment. This was the first increase in US interest rates since December 20xx. While Fed chair XY indicated that future increases would be “gradual”, the US central bank surprised the market by raising its “dot plot” projection for the number of interest rate rises it expects in 20xx to three, compared to its previous estimate of two.
The Japanese government announced fresh stimulus measures worth around JPY 28 trillion (EUR 230 billion) and the Bank of Japan took steps to help the nation’s struggling banks by introducing measures aimed at steepening the yield curve. This included pledging to keep yield on 10-year Japanese government bonds at around zero and vowing to raise inflation to above the official 2% target.
The decline of the building market affected cement deliveries in Italy (-8.6%). They were also affected by particularly adverse weather conditions in the latter months of the year, making it impossible to make up for losses suffered in the previous period. In December alone the market decreased by 32% vs. December 20xx. Our unit sales of hydraulic binders and clinker decreased by 13.2% YoY, including quantities for export, which ended with a worse-than-average trend. Prices featured a positive trend in the first half of 20xx, followed by gradual but continuous reduction, due to shrinkage of demand and intensification of competition. Unit revenues increased by an average of 8%, which was not sufficient to counterbalance lower unit sales. The combination of lower volume and higher prices translated into a 7.6% reduction in net sales of cement, which decreased from €606.7 mn to €560.8 mn. To the detriment of profitability there was a further increase in production costs, mainly due to the surge of oil prices, which affected fuel and electricity prices. EBITDA was consequently 25.1% lower than in 20xx, decreasing from €179.9 to €134.8 mn.

Der rückläufige Baumarkt in Italien führte zu einem Rückgang der Zementlieferungen um -8,6 %. Negative Folgen hatte auch die schlechte Witterung in den letzten Monaten des Jahres, die es unmöglich machte, die im vorangegangenen Quartal erlittenen Einbußen wettzumachen. Allein im Dezember brach der Markt um 32 % gegenüber dem Vorjahresmonat ein. Unser Absatzvolumen bei hydraulischen Bindemitteln und Klinker sank im Vorjahresvergleich um 13,2 %, und auch das Exportvolumen blieb hinter dem Durchschnittswert zurück. Die positiven Preistrends im ersten Halbjahr 20xx gingen aufgrund nachlassender Nachfrage und zunehmendem Wettbewerbsdruck in einen allmählichen, aber anhaltenden Preisverfall über. Die Umsatzsteigerung von durchschnittlich 8 % konnte den Absatzrückgang nicht kompensieren. Die Kombination aus geringerem Absatzvolumen und höheren Preisen mündete in einen Rückgang der Nettoumsatzerlöse im Zementsegment von 606,7 Mio. EUR auf 560,8 Mio. EUR (-7,6 %). Der Gewinn wurde durch weiter steigende Produktionskosten belastet, insbesondere durch den Ölpreisanstieg, der sich in den Brennstoff- und Strompreisen niederschlug. Das EBITDA sank daraufhin um 25,1 % gegenüber 20xx auf 134,8 Mio. EUR.
