Hello everyone! I started loving languages at the very moment I started studying them. I believe I was 14 years old at the time. First English, then French. At first, however, I didn't think I was going to end up working with them.
I decided to study Computer Science. I liked it very much. We always had computers at home, even in the early 1980s because my father has been a university professor in this field since the 1970s. I graduated in Computer Science and became a systems analyst. I worked in the IT industry for 6 years. I did not study languages for a few years and I missed it. I was not really satisfied as a systems analyst, even though I worked for an excellent company and had a very stable job. So I started to think of how I could make a living out my knowledge of languages.
I started translating as a hobby sometime in 2006-2007. Then I searched paid jobs on the Internet. Eventually I found ProZ.com and other websites related to translation. I started quoting and I was never chosen for any jobs. I participated in some translation contests here, and also in the KudoZ section. I remember it took about 9 months since I started quoting here until I got my first job. Finally! From then on, I kept getting a steady and increasing number of jobs and clients. After that, I still worked for 6 months as a systems analyst while translated as a part-time job. Finally, I quit my IT job by the end of 2008 and became a full-time translator.
As a translator I had the opportunity to live abroad, since I could work from anywhere just with my laptop and Internet access. I lived in Vienna for 4 months to study German, and I also lived in London for 3 months, just for the experience, and traveled all over Europe in the meantime.
It's been over 11 years now and 16 million translated/proofed words as a full-time paid freelance translator. I'm very glad and I hope I can continue doing that.
