I translate from English, French, Italian and Spanish. When I started translating professionally I had much more work in French than in English (70% vs. 30%). 40 years later the situation is quite different I’m translating much more English than French and this year so far I’ve translated circa 5,000 words ES-PT and 0 words IT-PT…

At university, I was trained in English, French and Portuguese as my three source languages. As Portuguese was my third language, my degree in translation only features French and English and I have no other official certifications in that language, which means that ProZ cannot certify my Portuguese-Spanish combination. This has meant virtually no work in that pair, something that really annoys me as I love the language and would like to use it much more!

I used to do patent abstracts from German for one client. My German is not as good as my Russian, but in this case I knew it would be thoroughly checked by specialists in the relevant fields. This ended about ten years ago and I have not worked from German since.

When you state your language pairs, there is no distinction between translation and interpreting.
So I added Italian into English despite I do not normally translate into English, but if I did not have it in my profile I would miss interpreting job offers

I just checked my proz profile and I'm only displaying my main pair, ES-EN. My CV and profile elsewhere mentions other languages, such as French, German and Russian.
However, although my main degree subject at university was Russian, I have never translated from it professionally. I have never translated from German either, but I have a friend who does. Funnily enough, I only studied Spanish for six months in my final year at uni as a "filler" subject to make up my credits, and yet ... I haven't done any translations from French and Catalan (neither of which appear in my proz profile) for over a year, and even then they were short jobs, fewer than 1000 words each.
And although neither Portuguese nor Italian are working languages for me, I have somehow managed to accrue kudoz points in these pairs:
English to Portuguese 12
Spanish to Italian 4

In fact I work in languages which I do not show much on my profile.
I do in fact translate from Swedish and Norwegian besides Danish, but I have no formal qualifications in Swedish or Norwegian.
On paper, I have qualifications in French and German, but I never use them professionally.

I can sometimes have useful input to EN-FR and ES-EN questions on KudoZ.
I would never translate professionally in the reverse pair, although I used to do it quite often for a bottle of the local Languedoc produce. I can't see myself ever getting a high enough level in Spanish, but as a resident there are sometimes expressions I'm familiar with. KudoZ helps me to learn anyway, and learning Spanish - for me - is a need, not just for fun.

I put also DE>IT as language pair but I never committed to jobs including this pair. You can't see, in fact, the pair displayed on my account!
It doesn't mean I don't know German. It's just I don't feel ready to translate something so difficult into this language yet. That's why it doesn't display on my SEO.

I've added my reverse language pairs but hidden them on my profile because, like Sheila, I work only into my native language but sometimes have input to offer on term searches in the reverse pairs.

As a matter of fact, I had a formal training in this pair and I actually started as a Polish into Russian translator many years ago. Sadly, the rates are so low that it does not make sense to do it professionally. I still try to keep my Polish up to date but of course, it is my weakest pair now. A few weeks ago I received a request but it was not my field so I had to decline it.
