The first time I went birdwatching with GUPECA (Aves Uruguay) I was very surprised that people kept calling out the Latin names of the species we saw. I thought they were just showing off how smart they were. Mistake ! As it turns out, the local names for birds (and plants, etc) are very, very regional, and may quite different 200 or 300 kms away.
So what the author of this article points out is, in fact, the common sense approach used by people who specialize in birds (plants, etc).
