Thank you very much for this extremely well written article based on solid experience and insight. I am a German to English translator in the field of arts and culture and also philosophy and academia, and your observations align closely with my own experience. I have been in the field for over 25 years and feel that the main distinguishing factor of a good translation is style and what I like to call "roots" or "feet" in the real world and the original text. Sometimes the use of a machine-generated translation as a first draft has thrown me off course, so I prefer to translate first and use AI as a "check" to make sure that I didn't forget any parts of the sentence or make any blatant errors. It adds an additional step in my process: 1. translate, 2. check with AI translation, 3. check with German, 4. edit English, 5. proofread. Although this adds an extra step and takes more time, it improves the quality of the final translation and perhaps eliminates the need for a further stage of editing and revision.
