The maximum leave I took was 1 month for health reasons (total thyroidectomy.), but I made all the arrangements needed before (I engaged a secretary) and I didn’t lose any clients (most didn’t notice what was going on). Regarding parental leaves, when I started freelancing my children were all grown-up and my baby days were truly over… | | | Edith van der Have Niederlande Local time: 15:15 Mitglied (2016) Englisch > Niederländisch + ... I went on maternity leave for 4 months last year. Before that, I informed my agency clients that I would be away and instructed a virtual assistant - a translator herself - how to deal with direct client requests, with the help of carefully selected translator-proofreader pairs for each client. My clients were happy with that solution and returned after my absence as well. I did my own bookkeeping (invoicing and VAT), though, which took just a few hours per month.

I went on a 2-month holiday twice, and the one time I worked 3 days out of 7 during that holiday, and the other time I decided to have a proper holiday and only answers emails but do no actual work during that holiday, and I lost good clients. Plus, I discovered that it still feels like a holiday to me even if I keep working, if I'm somewhere else during that time. | |

I was an employee when I had maternity leave, I think this poll is directed more at freelancers?
I wouldn't take leave for that long, because my direct clients would need to find a replacement who might prove to be cheaper or faster than me.
However, I am thinking very seriously of travelling with my laptop. Taking my time to visit places while working, taking my time to travel to avoid flying, for the sake of the environment and also so I can take my dog. | | | Michael Harris Deutschland Local time: 15:15 Mitglied (2006) Deutsch > Englisch Yes, but for health reasons | Jan 6, 2024 |
I had to have an operation on both of my shoulders (one after another) that took 8 months to heal, then another OP on my stomach and last but not least on my ankle. all took about 12 months. All sport injuries that I kept on putting off, but they only got worse and at the end, forced me to take action. Fortunately I had a good health insurance that kept me going without earnings and all of my regular customers were there when I got back.

I had a stroke 18 months ago. For about a year I did not accept translations, and when I came back, I found very few offers. That reminds me that I should remind my clients that I'm back in business! | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: Have you ever taken a long leave (over 3 months)?
