Having trouble adding files to Trados 2011 project

I am trying to add two Word files to a project in Trados 2011, but the program only recognizes the files as reference files. I have tried to change the file use type, but it doesn't allow it. Has anyone had this problem and found a solution? Unfortunately it is urgent. Thanks in advance!

... they are not really the type of word file you think they are? Try changing the extension until it works:

DOC
DOCX
RTF
ODT

Sometimes files get created in one format, often from another system of some sort, and are then given the incorrect extension to go with it. Word doesn't care but Studio does!
