Beyond doubt, the guy was furious; hideously, brutally cross and capable of great violence - a fully grown male filled with the same stupid rage and uncontainable spite as a playground bully of 10.
I feared for the other man - this could turn nasty, and who knew what that bully might do? And just as I thought the whole thing would blow up and all hell would be released, all was saved. Someone else came along, oozing polite consideration and restraint and, gliding serenely through the simmering situation, dissipated the danger.
And no one had got out of their car or exchanged a word.
The whole drama had been mute but for the limited vocal expression afforded the drivers by their engines. The bully had doubtless snarled and grunted at the wheel of his car, but the distance and the slanting light made it impossible for mere facial expressions to communicate to the poor victim in front of him the full force of his fury.
He hadn't rammed the guy, he hadn't sounded his horn or screamed out of the window as I watched their drama play out, but he had very effectively signalled that he was, as far as he was concerned, the big dog and quite happy to kill the little dog, if only to send a message to others that he commanded respect.
In turn, the guy in front had signalled his response with equal clarity. A car doesn't have a tail, but I saw his car with one jammed firmly between its back legs. A car can't hunch its shoulders and cower, but this one did, making small, cramped movements, anxious, self-conscious little stops approaching a roundabout, and nervous, tentative glances into the oncoming stream of traffic.
It wasn't the actual cars that made this story: the bully was in a bland, middle-of-the-road hatchback - a Honda, I think - and the victim, yes, was in a smaller car, but a Peugeot 207, so, not a whole lot smaller, really.
It wasn't their scale or visual style that sent these messages, it was the way they were driven - their body language. And watching, I wondered why it had never happened: car ballet. I'm not exactly a great patron of the arts - I live in Ross-on-Wye and restore old Land Rovers - but watching the complex communication between these two drivers playing out their delicate battle, I wanted to see more, to see a further exploration of what is an incredibly expressive medium.
There were no flourishing moves, no spin turns, J-turns or stunt driving. Like micro-expressions, the smaller, seemingly insignificant, tiny moves are what reveals someone's thoughts, messages and intentions. Something about the way a car draws to a stop, positions itself near the centre or the side, turns quickly or slowly, accelerates or slows forcefully; all of these things are actions that can be done in a purely robotic, automated fashion, or with soul and meaning. And I think most of the time they are done with soul and meaning. We are all performers.
It will, of course, need a stage, this new auto-ballet company of mine, but there already is one ready - we drive on it daily. The performances could be played out in context, and for an audience already involved. I would love it if at some point in my commute to London, a ballet about love, loss or rivalry were to be played out on the M4 by three Astras and a pair of Clios doing nothing illegal or dangerous, just driving with the traffic.
The local radio station could arm the audience with a bit of back story, like reading the programme at a play, and the tiniest and most subtle of moves would convey the most tremendous scope of emotions and meanings. To see the lead, maybe a Smart Coupe playing a lovelorn swan, spurned by the object of her passion - a handsome but stupid Monaro - pursued off the M4 and down the A329M to Bracknell by the dark and brooding moorhens, played by two guys in grey Astras, would be a truly tremendous thing with which to start your day.
The players wouldn't have to be paid - they could perform the piece on their daily commute.
I'm also going to devise a solo piece - I think it will be about a returning sailor finding his wife run off with a friend and his home rented to a family of bakers - and perform it myself. I shall insert a lengthy, quite moving section as the sailor reflects over his years at sea and the gulf this has put in place between his life on land and the life at sea that he has chosen over it. And I shall communicate the anger, sadness and regret through expressive driving.
Bear with me if you see me: this might take a bit of polishing to get right. But it's going to be wonderful.

Вне всяких сомнений, этот парень был в ярости; ужасно, зверски злой и способный на большое насилие - совершенно взрослый мужчина, наполненный тем же бестолковым бешенством и неконтролируемой злобой, что и 10-летний хулиган со спортивной площадки.
Я опасался за другого мужчину - дело принимало угрожающий оборот, и кто знает, на что пойдёт хулиган? И как раз тогда, когда я ожидал, что дело выйдет из-под контроля и черти полезут из ада, всё утихло. Кто-то ещё появился, источая вежливую деликатность и сдержанность и, безмятежно скользя мимо кипящей ситуации, разогнал сгущающуюся опасность.
И никто не вышел из машины и не ругался.
Вся драма была приглушена, если не считать голосов моторов водителей. Хулиган, без сомнений, ворчал и брюзжал у руля своей машины, но расстояние и косые лучи света помешали донести бедной жертве впереди всю глубину его ярости с помощью лишь выражения его лица.
Он не таранил этого парня, он не нажимал на гудок и не кричал из окна, пока я наблюдал за течением их драмы, но очень эффективно дал знать, что он - большой пёс и он будет рад убить маленькую собачку, просто чтобы сообщить другим, что его следует уважать.

I drove past a thatched cottage in the countryside the other day. Amazing, it was. I've no real idea of how thatching is done, but I know it involves making a whole roof, and a waterproof one at that, out of nothing more than a load of old twigs. Centuries ago, I suppose there must have been hundreds, if not thousands, of people who knew how to thatch roofs, which is why we have ‘Thatcher' as a surname.
These days, there are probably only a handful. Mind you, there are only a handful of thatched houses in 2011, and that's probably just as well. My house has proper tiles on the roof, and to be honest, I wouldn't want to go to bed under a bonfire constructed by Baden-Powell himself.
Still: as long as the thatched cottage survives, there will be people around who can mend its roof. The skill will become highly specialised, but I can't see it dying out.
Many people are worried about this sort of thing. Only the other day, I heard some campanologists on the radio complaining that the art of bell-ringing would soon disappear, because no young people were interested in it.
I doubt it, really, because there will always be a few medievalists drawn to the risk of hanging themselves as a Sunday morning pastime, and, as long as there are, bells will be swungen. But let's just say that absolutely no youths develop an interest in bell-ringing. In another 50 years' time, the skill could indeed vanish. That's a terrible thing, isn't it?
Not really. It will only vanish if no one is interested, and if no one is interested in bell-ringing, no one will care that it's gone. I'm assuming that nobody these days knows how to bait a bear or behead someone with a pikestaff, and perhaps someone lamented the decline of these traditional crafts on ye Today programme in the 18th century, but it hardly matters now.
When I was a boy, I could operate the school's spirit duplicator, or ‘Ditto Machine'. If you don't know what one of these is, it's a primitive form of photocopier that reproduced a master document, from a drum, using special inks dissolved in meths.
I bet nobody from the generation below mine can still work one of these. Good. They were rubbish, and the meths made all the kids a bit high. So it doesn't matter that the ancient skill of operating the Ditto has died out, because we now have the Hewlett-Packard C4200-series combined digital scanner and photocopier, and I bet nobody in 1973 could have got that going.
Other skills that have largely died out but that we're not missing include pargeting, curing lunacy with leeches, reading the colour-coding on transistors, playing the hurdy-gurdy, tuning a crystal radio set, digging canals and hand-carving gargoyles for new cathedrals. These have largely been forgotten, because we don't need them.
Does it matter, then - and I keep being told that it does - that no one can mend their own car these days? Fifty years ago, any self-respecting bloke knew how to set the contact breakers on an Austin A35 blah blah blah and regrind the valves blah blah blah carburettor idle adjustment blah blah grease nipple.
But I'm getting slightly bored with old giffers saying things like: "Well, of course, in my day, when your car went wrong, you knew how to fix it yourself." What they forget is that in their day, the car went wrong every 15 minutes.
The fact that no one can do this sort of thing any more is great news, because it shows how much better the car has become. People didn't spend all that time under the bonnet for the purposes of self-improvement. They did it because their cars were crap. Now they're better, and we can move on from the misery of the distributor cap.
Look - I like mucking about with old stuff and trying to mend it. I find it engaging, and I think it's good for the soul. But I'm a pervert. There are enough other perverts around to keep a few special old things in order, but the rest of you needn't worry about it. What was once part of the yoke of the human conscience is now just a hobby for those who want it.
Many of the old skills of car ownership have disappeared in my motoring lifetime, but new and more relevant skills have emerged to replace them, such as configuring the seats in an MPV or fitting a bangin' stereo.
And I'll tell you what's even more amazing than the thatching job. Last week, I met a man who could operate the satnav in a Maserati.

На днях я проезжал мимо соломенного домика в деревне. Удивительный - вот он какой.
