Update: Eureka! It worked.
I thought, "What the heck, it's raining anyway" and tried again, this time with all instances of virus scanners and the like switched off (Ctrl+Alt+Del, stop everything that looks like it belongs to your virus scanner).
No 'Clean Install', just full installation on top of an already existing, but non-functioning installation.
Synergy works, TagEditor works, Workbench recognizes MultiTerm, even the Spellchecker in TagEditor (only after renewed online activation).
If Synergy turns out to be a stable program it may actually turn out to be a real improvement.
We'll see. Anyway, hope this helps one or the other.
Good luck!

What antivirus do you use? It might be helpful to know that.
It worked perfectly with Kaspersky on my machine.

Antivirus/antispyware Apr 9, 2007

Just for the record and being one of those who has problems, I'm using AVG Free Edition with Windows Defender. Defender opened several times during installtion, asking for approval of various components, which I gave.

edit: Don't have time right now, but will try shutting down all fo the anti items and reinstalling this evening. I'll check in later with the results

Yes, you're right. It's Avira AntiVir.
There are at least 4 processes running in the background, all starting with av.., i.e. 'avmail.exe' and 'avgent.exe'. I don't know which caused the trouble here, but it's happened before where I couldn't install a program due to the virus scanner. I switched them all off during installation and back on again by rebooting Windows XP.

Copy of Tapsa's solution from another thread Apr 9, 2007

Tapsa, hope you don't mind me copying your solution in here. It worked for me.

Tapsa's solution:

After extensive detective work (read: "just being lucky") I propably found a fix (the "Attempt to initialize..." message was the clue).

Check if you have registry entries corresponding to
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers?
If there is "explorer.exe " as an entry, removing that
fixed the problem

Of course, you must reboot after making this change and be very careful because tampering with registry is risky.
