Hello!

I have Bachelor degree in English Language and Literature and Master degree in Translations.

Now I am interested in taking a UK online interpreting medical course (as I am based in Bulgaria) which is suitable for interpreting during medical meetings/trainings/conferences, etc.

I would be grateful to you if you could give me more information on this!

Possible Medical course online Oct 31, 2010

Hello Nataliya,

I don't know that there is a course such as the one you're looking for. If you do come across one, please let me know.

Otherwise, have you looked at the various universities in the UK which offer conference interpreting (Heriot-Watt in Edinburgh; Salford University in Manchester; University of Bath; Westminster University in London to name a few). There is also the DPSI (Diploma in Public Service Interpreting. This has 3 options: law, health & local government. I know that there is an online course being run and below are the details. I cannot vouch for the quality of any of the courses.

"An independent course provider, who co-ordinates the DPSI preparatory course on line; her name is Helena El-Masri. Details of this course can be accessed via the website www.dpsionline.co.uk . The exam is paid by the candidates directly to the Institute of Linguists, Helena El Masari is not associated to IOL. Although the website stipulates an October start Helena has advised entry upto November 2010 is acceptable. "

Good luck !

Dear Rekha,

Thank you for the information provided. I had a look at the DPSI online preparatory course organized by Ms Helena. It is focused on Law, Police, Immigration, etc. However, I would like it to be focused on health, medicine, etc. I contacted Ms Helena regarding this particular aspect of the DPSI and now I am waiting for her reply.

I found out many online medical interpreting courses for USA. IMIA is the one which offers an online course which includes medicine terminology and conference interpreting. I am still making a research on the web to find out more information on the subject. MA in Conference interpreting is too expensive for me (that's why I prefer a course). Now I also start thinking of interpreting just in the Public sector (no conferences).
