Hi, everyone. I will be going to the Dominican Republic in a few months and I am wondering if any of you are familiar with the Spanish spoken there or if you know of any books or movies that might help me get a preview of what is to come. I will be interacting quite a bit with native Dominicans who most likely know very little English and I would like to be familiar with their everyday vocabulary. This post is in the Interpreting forum because I will be with a group from the United States who will need interpretation in order to communicate.

Thank you in advance for any help or advice.
Best wishes.

Dominican Republic Spanish
Dominican Spanish in its spoken form works very fast indeed. A typical Dominican fires out the words in rapid staccato, causing all but their compatriots to struggle to understand. “Repítelo más despacio, por favor”, is the polite way of asking for a second chance. Sometimes, even native Spanish speakers from other parts of Latin America or Spain find that the Spanish spoken by their Dominican cousins takes a little while to adjust to, mainly because of the speed of delivery.

Thank you, Javier! Apr 12, 2011

Thanks so much, Javier! I appreciate your reply and the links. It looks like there are a lot of videos on YouTube of people from the Dominican Republic. I have also found a few books online on the history of the country, which might provide some good information on the culture there and why people speak the way they do.
Thanks again.
