Dear All,



I would like to share with you the infinite joy that I had in grading the above question in the Spanish monolingual category.



Grading is never an easy task when equally good answers are proposed, but when one of them is so outstanding both in originality and relevance, one cannot help but selecting it.



I never had so much pleasure grading a KudoZ question. Although I was unable to reward the other answerers for their research efforts, personal input and participation, I remain confident that I did the right choice.



This was truly a feast for my eyes. Hope you relish in it as much as I did.

For me the KudoZ arena has been somewhat of a private university and a very rewarding experience.

The analysis of the words, the looking them up (dictionaries, glossaries), the checking of their frequency (Google & similar) and the peer responses and the decision of the asker is a very good linguistic experience.

Who would have thought, Oso, that only three days after your birthday, you would be using the two Creole words that I taught you?



You probably could not - in your wildest dream - and neither did I have any realistic expectation that you would ever use them.



A great example of Applied Linguistics. Isn\'t life surprising?

The dilemma of native speakers May 23, 2003

What I find interesting, from a linguistic standpoint, is how easy it is for native speakers to use a word in the proper context, and not so easy for them to explain why.



I found myself in a similar predicament regarding a translation request for the Creole word makwali. I translated it into French easily, but when I had to give explanations to the asker, that\'s when I had to do the self-query task.



Dictionaries are not sufficient, and I have to confess that I still had doubts even after many of you had listed definitions. It took Martin\'s savvy use of pertinent examples for the notion to sink in.



Linguistic and mental queries are all the more difficult in my vernacular language where some words and/or concepts are not easily translatable.



I am pretty sure that a native Spanish speaker would not use calidad and cualidad interchangeably in colloquial occurrences, yet, when asked about their respective use in context, that\'s when self-doubt arises.



It is simply one of those mysteries of human life...



After my eye-opening experience with Martin\'s very brilliant approach, I am very confident that I won\'t ever have any doubt as to the proper use of calidad vs. cualidad. Hooray!!

I answered to Chenoumi (What a name!) Many thanks to all of you. ¿Es esta la forma de dirigirse al foro. Perdón, pero soy nuevo, muy nuevo en ProZ.com y todavía no se bien cómo moverme. Además, hoy he estado ocupado dando clases de inglés, algo que hago desde hace más de catorce años. Sobre calidad y cualidad, simplemente me puse a escribir desde la perspectiva espontánea del español. I could pose a similar question to an English speaker by asking: How would you make a difference between ser y estar. Por ejemplo, y este es algo que me pasó haciendo una traducción al inglés para la escritora de ciencia ficción argentina Angélica Gorodischer. En una parte de un discurso ella puso: ¿Las mujeres estamos locas o somos locas? What a problem to have to render this in English. Well, I decided: Are we simply crazy, or essencially mad? But anyone could criticize this. Wouldn't you. Thanks to all of you. It's a terrific experiencie having come across this place.

I don't know whether you are referring to my last name, Jolicoeur, (beautiful heart) which I bear thanks to a French Canadian ancestor - my great grand father.

OR

to CHENOUMI, which is my nickname Minouche[ ...backwards!!

PS I have to run, but will come back to discuss a bit more the linguistic aspect of your answer.
I knew it... Such a perfect explanation could only have come from a t e a c h e r!
