Acceptance and agree/disagree ratio Aug 3, 2010

IMHO to warn potential "victims" it would be enough to display the ratio of answers posted to accepted and/or ratio of agrees to disagrees.

Now that's a really good idea. It's not subjective or open to abuse. It would provide additional factual information of great interest.

If:
"x" has a ratio of 100:200 (answers posted/kudoz points)
and "y" has a ratio of 100:50 (answers posted/kudoz points)

then everyone, newcomers and old hands alike, would know that "x"'s answer could well be more reliable.

It would also deter many people from answering off the top of their head / giving literal translations.

I wish Proz would put a stop to all the phony native language claims

I've seen some comical characters in my language pair claiming English as their native language, when it's obvious it isn't. Even worse, they firmly believe it's not clear their English is just "fairly good" but not native. This way, they are underestimating and disrespecting other colleagues' intelligence and perception. And I think it's very rude.

I wonder, how many native languages could a preson, not residing in Switzerland, or any other official multi-language country have. Even if we define native as parental language(s), a person normally has only 2 parents for God's sake. I just saw the other day some profile claiming like 3 native languages and it just didn`t make sense. English being one of the native languages as per their statement. It`s odd to say that almost all of the information they provided was full of basic level errors. Not typos, but errors. I also support the idea that there should be some kind of control over any sich incredible and impossible claims. I don`t want to badmouth here, but I even saw the profile of a person in a different site though, who claimed professional knowledge in a certain language and since I did not see any educational grounds for that I kept reading and what do you know - she actually stated that she acquired "professional skills" in this particular language, due to residing and being a waitress for 3 years in the country, where the above language is official. Then what was I doing wasting my time so foolishly studying and preparing to obtain some second language degree? I could have just worked for Hooters and become a native...
I haven`t checked if this pwerson has registered a profile here, but I won`t be surprised, because I've seen her profile on 2 other sites since then.

Excellent post Aug 4, 2010

Hi

Lots of moans and groans about Proz users etc....

Personally I think the structure of the Proz site is excellent. As for points, I am not against them. If somebody bothers to take the time to help another colleague, then what is wrong with awarding points? We don't get money as a reward, so points are just fine.

Nobody has a gun in your back. You don't have to answer any queries or help any colleagues, but this is defeating the whole object of the existence of Proz.

If you have a problem with a particular colleague who keeps posting queries (I think I have only come across one in my travels) then filter that colleague out and don't answer their query.

Sure, it makes us all feel better having a moan, but ultimately each one of us is in control of our own actions, so if a colleague's postings bother you, don't get involved with them. Spend more time perfecting your own translations and work.

Liz Askew

Very well put, Liz. The only thing I would add is that in addition to the option of filtering out colleagues, instead of starting a thread I would think one should contact a moderator. If it's true abuse the site should be aware of it so that they can hopefully do something about it.

Viewing Kudoz queries and re answerers Aug 21, 2010

You can't always predict what will come up in a job. In the past Kudoz has saved my life. For example...

What does bug me is people who don't even speak my language replying to KudoZ queries, after looking up a word in some online dictionary somewhere and submitting it with "Just an idea" in the explanation field... next time that happens I'm just going to refuse the answer outright.) [/quote]

@ Liz: Just to say, I don't get notifications, I just look at the Kudoz questions page in a given pair, so filtering doesn't come into it.

@ ryancolm - quite agree it can be useful, but also agree, about alternative limited offerings, with the second point in questions I've seen, though not necessarily asked.

Too many questions should be a minus Aug 22, 2010

George Hopkins wrote:

Answering questions to win points seems a waste of time -- what can you do with them?

I'm becoming less keen to answer questions, especially from those who seek answers to 'lists' and those who ask frequently. Why do somebody else's job when they are obviously ignorant or lazy?

So is it - but in my opinion there should it be a minus in ProZ profile, if some askers let the answerers to do their job, the translation.

Kudoz points are given by the asker who requests the answerer to share his or her wisdom. I saw many irrational Kudoz points assignment. This can be a basic abuse of the system: the less-clever assesses the clever. Many Kudoz questions are quite naive, however.

Maybe not so drastic steps, but something should be done Jun 23, 2012

I personally have nothing against brownies. Let people have them if this makes them happy. It is not really like you can get a free membership with a certain number of them -- it is more for the prestige reasons, and perhaps, some people may even find answering the questions as a sort of quiz -- the way other people do crosswords. Anyhow, some of the people racing for brownies are beyond themselves. It becomes some kind of a hostile race instead of an attempt to solve linguistic problems. I think this is what Kudoz is mostly for. If one person suggests something really great, but incomplete, another person may work on the phrase and come up with the complete phrase. Here is is as if people owned copyrights to their phrases and you cannot even use a part of their phrase. This really becomes like kindergarden at times. Often you cannot make up a correct phrase without using apart of their phrases.Collapse
