Swedish not in language pair lists

Someone posted a question as all-English which obviously should have been English-Swedish. I wanted to change the language pair to English-Swedish, but Swedish is not in the language pair lists on either side! Nor is "Svensk". Is there some new politically correct name for it of which I am not aware?

Hi Jack,

Thanks for bringing this question to our attention. I just changed the language pair. And Swedish is in the language pair list. I don't know why you cannot see it, though. It definitely hasn't changed name

I thought the languages were in alphabetical order, so I was looking towards the end of the list. But I now find they are not in alphabetical order. What order are they in, does anyone know?

Language pairs in KudoZ are always listed in the order you specify them in your own KudoZ settings.
Whenever you want to ask a question that is not in your usual language pairs, open the "More languages" link and you will find a list of all available languages.

Dear Csaba,

Try to edit a question and you’ll see that on the Edit Question page the languages are not listed in alphabetical order. The same applies to the the fields of expertise in Freelancers Directory, which are not in alphabetical order either. As far as I’m concerned, I think I’d find things easier if they were listed in alphabetical order.

I noticed that, too. So strange... Maybe they are listed on continents or something similar, I don't remember exactly, but, anyway, it would be easier if they were in a strict alphabetical order.

However, upon hitting the Edit button, we find several alphabetical lists from most to least frequently asked languages, AFAICS, which I find convenient. So, if you need Arabic, represented by a large community in Proz -hence must be used very often in Kudoz- you have it at the top of the first list. For Afrikaans, however (which is a smaller language in terms of the frequency of Kudoz questions asked), you have to skip to the second alphabetical list which begins right after the first one ends with Urdu; the second list ends with Vietnamese and right after that comes the third list beginning with Ancient Hebrew, and so on, 'zzzOtherzzz' and 'zzzTest Language' serving a break function. I hope my attempt to explain things won't create yet more confusion, just check the list out, you'll see that it's very neat

Now let me go and try to understand the language of specialized field lists!

Yes, it makes sense. The languages seem indeed to be grouped depending on how frequent they are asked. I have no problem with the way the languages are currently ordered, as I only need to select from the first group, but I think I’d find it inconvenient if I had to select a language from another group.

A bit off-topic now. I went to the Freelancers Directory and I noticed that sometimes the fields of expertise are grouped depending on their relatedness:

Agriculture
Livestock/Animal Husbandry

Engineering: Industrial
Mechanics/Mech Engineering

However, in other cases, I couldn’t understand the logics of the order:

Astronomy & Space
Finance (general)
Automation & Robotics

Computers: Systems, Networks
Law (contracts)
Cooking/Culinary


Xola, if you manage to understand the list of fields of expertise, please let us know!

I think all these lists should be in straight alphabetical order. In that way, everyone would know immediately where to look without having to work out the basis of grouping the listings.
