I often notice that Kudoz questions are posted choosing the field according to the typology of the document one is translating, instead of according to the term/paragraph itself.
For example: at times I see questions marked as "engineering/mechanics" while the question relates to legal terms, because it is part of a technical document but it is the legal part.
Or questions marked as "law/patents" but are technical questions on ceramics and such, because while it is cer... For example: at times I see questions marked as "engineering/mechanics" while the question relates to legal terms, because it is part of a technical document but it is the legal part.
Or questions marked as "law/patents" but are technical questions on ceramics and such, because while it is certainly a contract, the phrase is in the part of the contract that describes the technical features of a product.
Don't you agree that the field should be chosen according to the phrase, almost ignoring the original document (or maybe describing it in short, as a context), so that translators can choose at a glance whether the field of the question is relevant to their specialisation or not? ▲ Collapse

I think in fact KudoZ questions should only be divided into very broad categories. (Medicine, Mechanics, Law, Social 'Sciences etc. ) The finer categories can never be exhaustive, and then terms end up 'hidden' in an inappropriate category.
In my language pairs (Scandinavian languages, which are very active, but quite 'small' languages) there are very few terms in most of the finer categories, and some of them are in the wrong place. Medicine is impossible, for instance, because some of the categories are too narrow, and some simply do not exist. Where do you put WAD trauma, for instance, or rheumatology?
The glossary gets totally fragmented, with only a couple of terms or a perhaps a dozen in each category. Specific terms end up in 'General' because they simply do not fit anywhere else.
Could we have an alphabetical, non-categorised list for each language, so we could find terms at a glance even if they are placed in the wrong category, or incorrectly spelt etc?
That is another reason why they turn up as KudoZ questions - people can't find them in dictionaries or on the Net if the spelling is 'alternative' or wrong...
It's all part of the fun of KudoZ when you have time to play, but things get more and more chaotic as time goes on, and it is less useful as a tool! ▲ Collapse
