Hi there!
I have downloaded OmegaT for a glossary i need to make, but i'm stopped at a very basic stage: the translation! It doesn't seem to be working...

My text is a .txt one and when i upload it to OmegaT, the translation doesnt work. Yet, the source language is EN and the cible one is FR (which is what i need -a translation from english to french). What i have is just an exact copy of my original text. When i look at online tutorials, it seems i'm not doing anything wrong.

Your post is a little bit hard to understand. Could you describe in more detail what you want to do and what you did? You can write in French, as there are plenty of OmegaT people who can answer you in French.

OmegaT is not supposed to translate for you. From the website:
It does not translate for you!
http://www.omegat.org/en/omegat.html

Well, it can do it, but using Google Translate, and you have to pay Google for it.

What OmegaT does is record the translation you type yourself.

accents in glossary Jun 9, 2012

I don't know if this is the best place for this question or if I should start a new thread, so sorry if I've done the wrong thing.

I've started with OmegaT this week and today I created a glossary for the first time, carefully following the instructions in the User Manual. However, although most of my terms show up fine in the glossary window, the ones with accents in them aren't being picked up. What do I need to do? Do I need to create the accents using the character map codes or what?

Many thanks for your help

You have probably an issue with the encoding.

For words with accented characters to work, your glossary file must be named something.txt or something.utf8 *and* be encoded in UTF-8.

Probably, one of these two conditions is missing.

To be sure your glossary is working, just create it from OmegaT.
Use Edit > Create Glossary Entry, and it will create a compatible glossary file for you.

Thanks! Jun 9, 2012

Brilliant, thanks Didier.

I didn't pick up that you could do that from reading the user manual. I'm fairly sure the file is the right sort as I created it in line with the instructions in the manual and the other glossary terms without accents were showing up fine - only the accented ones were a problem; however, your method worked perfectly and they are now included.

Thanks again
Vikki

If the accents are not right, that's because the encoding isn't Jun 10, 2012

Which proves the encoding wasn't right.

If you compare the encoding of the glossary you created manually, and the encoding of the glossary created by OmegaT, you should see the difference.

For instance, open them under Notepad, and use Save as...
Notepad will offer by default the current encoding.
