I just submitted a support ticket about a possible scam in the Proz EN>FR offers today.
It looked pretty normal but the answer I received was very strange and the BB confirmed my doubts.
Not only did they accept my quote (quite expensive by Proz standards), but also :

"Just to le you know that our donors who will be responsible for this project will be paying through Money Notes. (Checks)"

Anyone else noticed it? Am I getting paranoiac? I don't think so...<

Anyway, be careful...

Hi,

I got the same, and it seems to be a scam.

Look for the email address in google.

Thanks!
Noelia

I received that one too. At first I did not think it was a scam. Exactly the same phrasing. Good I know it now.

Another one Aug 5, 2009

Hello all,

Just to let you know that I received the same offer.
I replied to it with a (quite expensive) quote and they accepted it.

Glad I looked for information before accepting the job!
Now I will not take the risk.

In my case, the phrase was slightly different:

"Just to let you know that our donors who will be responsible for this project will be paying through cashier's check."

Thanks.

Darío

same offer Aug 6, 2009

Hello,

I have replied to the same offer and, I have fallen in the trap. However, after some research on Google, I have found out the outsourcer is a scammer, so I gave up the job. I am disappointed...

Thanks for these feedbacks, it really helps.

Regards,
ilinca

is it enough? Aug 6, 2009

When I reported the scam, I asked Proz staff to send a message to all the people who had applied to this offer, I don't know if this was done.
I thought they would ban the user from the site, but he is still here...There is just a message on top of his page saying something like "contact information for this user could not be verified". Is this really enough?

I was also contacted by this client
and thankfully realised it was scam in the right time.

WHat can be done in order to stop such a thing from happening again to proz users?

An idea Aug 16, 2009

A system that would prevent a client from assigning a certain contract to several translators could help. For example, the client could have to enter somewhere on the site that translator X was granted the job, so no one else could get it as well. It would make this particular kind of scam mostly inefficient on a same-language basis, although the offer could be repeated every so often (but that would look suspicious to me, anyway -- seeing the same offer reappear many times -- and ProZ's team wo... It would make this particular kind of scam mostly inefficient on a same-language basis, although the offer could be repeated every so often (but that would look suspicious to me, anyway -- seeing the same offer reappear many times -- and ProZ's team would have time to ban the user after the first offense).

Another thing that would be great, although I seemed to understand that it wasn't in ProZ's intentions to deal with this part of the process, would be to force the client to pay in advance through the system and redirect the money to the translator once the translation is approved.

What else...

paying through the system Aug 17, 2009

Well...

The possibility of paying through the system already exists and I have already done a couple of jobs this way, but there is a major disadvantage : since the client has paid in advance, there is no room for negociation about the rate.

About disclosing the name of the "winner", I am not sure everyone would like it as it would show very clearly who is offering low rates in secret (Let's not be naive...have you ever been assigned a job at Proz with "normal" rates? I

You are right Aug 17, 2009

My reply was a bit unclear, but I meant that the client would have to indicate the identity of the translator to the system. A simple "This job has already been assigned" message would do as far as what is shown to the translators.
