There's a small link (goes easily unnoticed) labelled "Details" in the
lower right corner of the Gmail window:

It will tell you about possible suspicious sign in attempts to your account.

There were such attempts made to my account a few days ago, from the
USA and Japan:

This is why I took advantage of the "two-step verification" recommended to me by Google:

I tell more about it in the following video::

http://wordfast.fi/blog/cloud-computing/2012/11/13/secure-your-google-account-with-two-step-verification/
or
http://youtu.be/CLW5XpkOcwo?hd=1

It works with a mobile phone (no need for a smartphone) and doesn't
cost anything, unless you are roaming abroad (you receive an SMS sent
by Google). This will make sure no one can sign in to your account
from another computer, even if they manage to find out about your
password. When a device has been confirmed as your own or as trusted
with the verification code sent by Google, you can use it normally.
