Hi,
I just received a promotional offer for this programme but I'd like to know what everyone thinks about this tool. Is it worth the price?
From what I can see, it can only be bought with Credit Card and the only way to receive it is by physical shipment by airborne express... which means that I'll have to wait (don't know for how many days). And what if it does not arrive?
Has anyone used this method?
What are your views about this product?
Thanks in advance,<

Ritu,
I know that another colleague (Astrid) has expressed disappointment with this software, so you should definitely hear what everyone has to say before deciding.

Ritu,
I know that another colleague (Astrid) has expressed disappointment with this software, so you should definitely hear what everyone has to say before deciding.

In my case, I bought the Standard edition in November and upgraded in February to Preferred. In general, it works beautifully and doesn't have a steep learning curve. The manual is quite clear and easy to skim.

I was concerned that my brain might have trouble reading and speaking (rather than typing) the translation, but I seem to have adapted quickly to doing that.

It has noticeably sped up my production of the first draft of a translation. The program is generally quite accurate. Yes, it makes mistakes, but I make lots of mistakes when typing, which either have to be corrected immediately or upon proofreading.

I still have to carefully proofread (and edit and polish) what I've translated, but I don't find that that part of the process is any more time consuming for the spoken translation than for one that I would have typed.

And, of course, what a joy for my wrists and back--my "desk" chair is now just a comfy wicker thing, and I can lean back and talk away.

It is true that they delivered the software by Airborne. I thought that it was because they include a microphone. However, when I upgraded, I wanted to get the version quickly to do something for a regular client, and they still had to send a physical copy. I paid extra and got it in two days (I think) -- then, what else? the client postponed the job for a week. But yes, it's odd that they don't have direct downloads.

Finally, last week, I was working on a huge file with a lot of Mayan words in the translation, and that slowed down the Dragon considerably, but after I broke the file into 3 parts, and invested some time in "training the software," things seemed to get back to normal.

I'll be interested to see what others say. ...
Best,
Patricia

Great product Apr 13, 2007

Hi Ritu,

I have used the program a for more than a year. I am very positive about it. You can increase production and give your hands a little rest. I also invested in a good headset with USB connection and an internal soundcard in the headset cable (FYI: I use the Plantonics DSP 100). Don't expect the program to be 100% accurate, but an accurateness of about 95% is already a very good help. I use the Dutch version. I would recommend it to anyone, and it is not expensive.

Dragon works well once you have used it for a while Apr 13, 2007

Hi Ritu,

I did initially express disappointment with Dragon, but it has been working for me very well in recent weeks, and I plan to use it for all translations now. However, it is very difficult to get it to that stage. It becomes more accurate in recognition the more often you use it, so you need to have time initially to persevere with it, during a quiet spell.

The other point is that it needs a minimum of 1GB of RAM, and that really is a bare minimum. 2GB is better.

The other point is that it needs a minimum of 1GB of RAM, and that really is a bare minimum. 2GB is better. To put it another way, you need a very up-to-date computer.

With the 1GB of RAM that I have had installed in my 3-year-old computer, it only types fast enough if I have freshly booted the computer, and I have to do this each time I begin dictating a new translation. Other applications and programmes slow the computer down, so that then Dragon types too slowly. In particular, Multiterm seems to need a lot of RAM as well, so that it is quite tricky to use Dragon successfully while at the same time having Multiterm open in order to add new words while translating.

I heartily recommend Dragon - but really in combination with a new generation computer.

I would recommend it Apr 13, 2007

Hi Ritu,

I can highly recommend this product to you. I have been using Version 8 (preferred) for more than two years now and it works very well. I bought the German version with an integrated English module so you can switch between both languages easily - just perfect for a translator! I had no problems training the software and it did not take long at all. I am absolutely impressed with the technology I must say.

It’s not perfect as has been said before, but you will have to proofread your work anyway.

I would love to hear from somebody who is using the professional version though. I am curious to learn whether the big difference in price is actually justified.

Astrid,
I'm happy to hear that the Dragon is not giving you fits any more!
Congrats on getting your new picture up, too....

Digital audio-typists vs. VRS/Voice Recognition System Apr 14, 2007

Typists may also have legal, medical and engineering experience and prompt you to reconsider your wording and inconsistent terminology:'but you said something else before'.

A digital dictation system - dictate into your PC and email one hour of dictated translation by broadband in about one minute to a typist at a (very) remote location to transcribe - also takes up less memory and is easier to install than Dragon with abs. no 'voice enrolment' requirement. The dictation is also stored on the PC, acting as a dictation station, so can be resent if necessary.

Though the erosion of profit margins is greater i.e. typists also charge by the word or thousand words, the feedback from a thinking human being means for me no going back to any version of Dragon, except in a dire emergency.

I'm not going to recommend a specific make of 'digital transcription kit' as that would be advertising, but there are at least 3 excellent ones on the market outside of the US.

Thank you all for your feedback.

Different dialect support - details coming soon May 2, 2007

Eric, Dragon does offer its software in different languages, I am determining if the current group buy will support languages other than English.

Also - Ritu, in terms of a ProZ.com group buy - we screen our partners closely and ensure that they are delivering products as described and on a timely basis. If for some reason you ever have a problem or issue with a good or service purchase through a ProZ.com group buy please let us know immediately and the issue will be rectified.

Current group buy is for English language version only May 2, 2007

I have just been informed that the current group buy is for the English language verion only. The software has been localized in to a few other languages, but our vendor cannot offer those currently. If that changes we will make an announcement.

Thank you
