From a description of a cooler for cement clinker made in a rotary kiln (see also my open question 'Kaltkanalproblem'):

"Leider entsteht ein Kaltkanalproblem. Dies ist dadurch bedingt, dass, wenn sich erst einmal ein kalter Kanal durch die Klinkerschicht gebildet hat, die Luft durch diesen Kanal strömt, was zu einer reduzierten Ausdehnung der Luft führt, was wiederum in einer verringerten Luftgeschwindigkeit resultiert. Eine verringerte Luftgeschwindigkeit führt dann wiederum zu einem Druckabfall durch die Klinkerschicht, wodurch der Kanal zu einem bevorzugten Weg für noch mehr durchströmende Luft wird.

Das Kaltkanalproblem kann durch Einführung einer vertikalen, internen Verschiebung in der Klinkerschicht gelöst werden. Diese Vertikalverschiebung bricht die kalten Kanäle bereits in einem frühen Stadium der Kanalbildung in Einzelteile auf ..."

I think this might be about a physical shifting/moving of some of the bricks; I don't think anything is being inserted. Instead, they are supposed to implement a different arrangement of the bricks in which some of them are shifted so that the channel cannot form - I'm actually thinking now they might be talking about a cheminee effect (see other Q/A)- not a physical channel, but a draft that come from cold air moving twoards warmer places...
Please take this as an educated guess only; I would ask the client unless we can find a brick baker ;-) to confirm this....
