And then: "Messgeräte dienen zur Bestimmung physikalischer Größen. Meistens führen sie im Rahmen einer Messung mittels einer Skalen- oder Ziffernanzeige auf eine quantitative Aussage über die zu messende Größe. Diese Aussage, der Messwert, wird als Produkt von Zahlenwert und Einheit angegeben. (Beisp.: Glasthermometer).
The background here is that in a previous version of this translation only "Messmitel was referred to, which the then translator called "measuring instruments". Now I have to enter changes, so must differentiate between the two.
"measuring system" is already taken for Messeinrichtung, which is presented as yet another category.

Here's one possibility - you could call it a measuring resource the first time, and a resource after than to avoid repetition (of which there is a lot, especially in the first sentence).
