I-messages

A particularly good way to prevent escalation of arguments and avoid putting others on the defensive is to state feelings or directions in the form of an "I message".
-----------------------
I-messages simply state a problem, without blaming someone for it. This makes it easier for the other side to help solve the problem, without having to admit that they were wrong...

agree BrigitteHilgner : That's it - useful references, plenty of further google hits.

disagree TonyTK : ... // ... because "Ich-Botschaft" is a term used in psychology and has a recognised English counterpart. I'm willing to change my grading if you can back up your suggestion with convincing arguments.

"I statement"

I used to work for an advice line and we were trained in this kind of thing. We always refered to it as the difference between "I statements" i.e. "I feel upset" rather than you statements i.e. "you upset me". The person that you ar4e speaking to can hardly argue with the fact that 'you are upset' but they might object to being considered the cause of this!!!

Sorry "DC Josephs" I obviously didn't read your note before adding this entry. I still think statement is more often used in the context than message.

Could this possibly be a difference between US/UK English? "I message being US" and "I statement being UK"?
Peer comment(s):

agree gangels (X) : The "Ich", esp. in Kant's and Fichte's philosophy, is generally translated as "self" or "ego", but here it's probably OK
