For me, not important at all. I get by fine without the Trados empire and its accoutrements. Life's too short
However, FWIW my mate swears by Trados, but still doesn't see the need for any kind of certification.

What is the point of certification? Nobody's going to ask for it. Just another a marketing ploy.
Not important at all for me and for the clients I work with (some are agencies) | Jun 11, 2018 |
I’ve never worked with Trados and usually I don’t work with CAT tools (though I’m working right now with XTM at the request of a very dear customer) and I’m never short of work, in fact I’ve been overloaded with work for months and I’m fully booked until next month.

It doesn't affect me because I don't use SDL Trados and, like Teresa, I'm fully booked.

CAT tools are meant to help translators work faster and/or produce more consistent translations.
Some of us prefer working without a CAT - fine. Some of us think they are faster and/or better translators with a CAT - fine.
As long as the translator knows how to use the CAT they work with, I don't see what certification would add.
Not at all important | Jun 11, 2018 |
Not at all important.
It is my choice of tool, and it means I can collaborate with clients who also use it, while I refuse to collaborate with clients who insist on other tools.
Certification of my language qualifications are far more important. I have never felt a need to be SDLR Trados Studio certified. I don't think it makes me a better translator, although not using it makes me SLOWER at times.

Also, I use Wordfast Pro and other CAT tools, but never SDL Trados - and I have plenty of work

I think being able to use a CAT tool is already a certification.
As you can see, there are many translators fully booked even though they don't use any kind of CAT tools!
However, I believe that a Machine Translator allows you to work faster.

I have been listening to my translators complain about Trados for the last 12 years, and how many other agencies require it. It never ceases to amaze me how good they must be at marketing, because I have heard little praise for the software. Personally, I resent that it has become a kind of by-default CAT tool that many just assume you have and use. I don't have it, and I don't require it, and don't plan to ever use it. TRADOS is a part of my life | Jun 11, 2018 |
I would like to oppose to those saying that they can work without CAT tools. Life is changing and technologies are changing so working without CAT tools sounds to me similar like working without using a computer and writing by hand. CAT tools (and of course not only TRADOS though it is one of my favourites as well as Memsource) save time and a lot of time when you get used to them.
Rebecca Garber Local time: 23:52 Mitglied (2005) Deutsch > Englisch + ... I use a Mac and Trados is PC only | Jun 11, 2018 |
Since my profile lists both my computer preference and the CAT tools that I do run, I use the requests for me to work in Trados as a weeder.
If the agency is so sloppy as to not read my profile, then they will be sloppy at other things. I simply trash their emails.

I find Trados very intuitive, so I don't think you need any specific certification. It's more of a marketing thing, I guess. It seems I am the only Trados fan around, hehe. I simply can't imagine working without it (and I have tried many CAT tools).

We have the right to choose the CAT we want to use. The market cannot force us to use Trados. We must repudiate this practice. It's like a restaurant forcing you to drink coca-cola when you want an orange juice. Entirely inadequate.
