This was, it seems, the future promised to me when I was given away at birth. What is a promise? An empty pledge if the receiver, and those in charge of him or her, do not set out to fulfill it. Was my future in my own hands? Not entirely, not at the beginning of my life. The slate of a newborn remains blank and fills gradually with what is lived and experienced, as long as one refrains from using markers belonging to other pasts. Nimm einem Kater die Klauen und er wird zum schüchternen Kätzchen. Lege einen Hund tagelang in Ketten und er verwandelt sich in ein bissiges Biest. Ich weigere mich zu denken, dass Hurerei auf Erbschaftsfaktoren zurückzuführen ist. Meine eigene Mutter prostituiert sich. Ich bin auf den Strich gegangen. Heißt das, dass Isa unseren Fußstapfen folgen wird? Diese Frage sollte ich gar nicht stellen. Ich sollte eher akzeptieren, dass meine Mutter eine tief deprimierte und unglückliche Frau ist, dass ich ebenso verzweifelt und mutlos bin wie sie.
Die Zeiten auf dem Genfer Straßenpflaster sind die einzig glücklichen Jahre meines Lebens. Nicht etwa, weil mir das Feilbieten meines Körpers an geile Männer Spaß machte.
