Thread poster: Jiang Xia

[Edited at 2013-08-22 02:26 GMT]

I think this has nothing to do with the job but the community/society in which you take part. The Hong Kong mentality, for example, is such that everybody wants to study business/finance/medicine because being a doctor/insurance broker/financial dude is the go-to job instead of being, say, a writer. See more I think this has nothing to do with the job but the community/society in which you take part. People will probably think you're on crack if you tell them you're a poet. When literature and arts are deemed as something "only the crazies" will work/study for, it doesn't surprise me that a freelancing job is considered second class. Me, on the other hand, find it hard to go back to the corporate world. Don't get me wrong, I love the perks and the insurance coverage (!) that comes with a regular 9 to 5, but with what I am doing now, I set my own schedule, I am free to move around the whole world and most of all, I love it. I still prefer having a part-time job while working as a translator, but I love it too much and would not want a full-time job for fear that I won't have enough time to do what I love. ▲ Collapse
