German term

Packzellenweiche

German to English Tech/Engineering Retail checkout / tills
This is from a text describing a food retailers checkout / till.
Packzellenweiche: I know what the term describes just not the English term. It is the dividing 'lever', long piece of metal on a pivot point that allows checkout assistants to push your shopping into one area, so you can pack while the next customer's shopping is being scanned. It effectually creates two packing areas for two separate customers to be served simultaneously.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Kind regards,
Sandra

bagging area divider

is the term used here

There are a few uses of "item accumulation divider"
e.g. http://www.google.com/patents/US7516818

The problem seems to be that these things have all but disappeared from the UK, so there is no commonly used name for them - the term "checkout divider" is used for the little bars that separate one customer's shopping from the next before it is scanned so needs to be distinguished from the Packzellenweiche.

agree Lancashireman : Your refs are more convincing than some others on this page: "a partition bar to be able a shopping of two customers to be managed (sic)"

agree Helen Shiner : This has the virtue of being comprehensible. Divider so commonly used in EN for such things. But I agree; they are little seen nowadays on these shores.

(bagging area) partition bar

I found the term "partition bar" that seems to fit the description and purpose of your device :
“A different accessory equipment can be applied according to customer’s needs. The bagging area feature rollers to simplify a downward movement of the goods as well as a partition bar to be able a shopping of two customers to be managed, at the same time. Bars reporting “next customer” in writing identify the shopping end. “

neutral Helen Shiner : This is a translation, unfortunately, as evidenced by the text you have highlighted. Clearly an Italian translator trying to wrestle with the same issue.

You are right - the wording of the reference is a bit odd!
