Long –term reference data and Virtual Met Data (VMD)
If appropriate, XX shall incorporate high-resolution modelled wind data into the analysis in order to provide a 10-year historic production time series.
XX’s Virtual Met Data (VMD) system will be used to downscale MERRA or ERA-Interim to account for the effects of the local terrain and ground cover in and around the potential wind farm sites.
VMD will provide simulated hourly wind speed and wind direction data at each wind farm site.
VMD is a mesoscale-model-based dynamic downscaling system for generating high-resolution (generally 2 km horizontal) wind data, and is founded upon two decades of research and development.
At the heart of VMD is the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, which employs a sophisticated land surface model, and high-resolution land- and sea-surface state data.
