What is the correct, official translation of this law, please
natalie grassmann
Bundesurlaubsgesetz (; "Federal Holiday Benefits Act")
Explanation:
Dear Natalie,

The only paid leave act in the US or UK I came across was the US FMLA or Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993. Since there seems to be no direct equivalent of the term in question in the US or UK (that I could find) I would consider leaving it untranslated and providing a translation in parentheses. This is perfectly acceptable in cases with legal terminology where due to differences in nations' laws no direct translation exists or is advised. The thing that comes closest in the US is a regulation issued by the Department of Labor in CFR29 (Code of Federal Regulations, Title 29) which deals with holiday benefits.

If you have to provide a translation, start with this: "Bundes-" is, of course, "Federal", "Urlaub" in a legal sense is "Holiday" (not vacation), add benefits because that's what it's about, and "Gesetz" is "act" (preferable to law), so altogether "Federal Holiday Benefits Act".

If anyone can shed better light on this, please let us know.

Cheerio,
Dierk

Hello Natalie, I agree fully with Dierk, only, it seems to me, you should again not forget to point out that it is a German law. So far.

3. Finally, the West German legislature also recognizes the great importance of leave and leisure time. On 1 January 1963 the "Jobholders' Minimum Leave Act", known as the Federal Leave Act, goes into effect. All jobholders older than 18 now have legally guaranteed minimum leave entitlement of 15 working days. After age 35, leave entitlement rises to a minimum of 18 working days.
