My partner is not at work today, it being a Bank Holiday in the UK. As we dont have any fixed plans for today, I am keeping an eye on my email, so I can at least respond quickly to any enquiries. Sometimes I work, but othertimes I don't!

My husband and I are both self employed, and having small children we sometimes take the day off to go on an outing with the children, sometimes he has work coming in, and sometimes I do.

What other holidays would you observe except your country's? And what do you care about someone else's? That said, there's a big difference in my book between "observing" and "not working" on that particular day if there's work to do. I am with Anton here: the government doesn't pay my bills. They have no say in determining my work schedule.

I am not really bothered with bank holidays as here in Germany there are many regions were there are bank holidays whereas in other regions there are not - depends on how religious the region is. I think that taking your days off when you want to is always an advantage of being a freelancer, but I normally enjoy working on those days when nobody else is as you dont get bothered that much - Weekends;-)

I do not have children so most of time I do not use national holidays, I'd rather take mine during period I know it's generally more calm at work level and I like my vacations to be quiet and without too much tourists. But sometimes I want to spend some time with family or friends and in those cases, it will be during national holidays...

Since I don't observe my country's holiday, the answer is no. Besides that, every day can be turned into a holiday.

I tend to ignore all bank holidays (except Christmas). Neil Cross wrote: You can tell it's a bank holiday today by looking out of your window - it's raining That would mean the whole of May has been a bank holiday here in Scotland!
Patricia Charnet United Kingdom Local time: 10:08 Member (2009) English to French ignore all bank holidays | May 30, 2011 |
I ignore all bank holidays - live in UK but get my working calendar sometimes synchronised with France or UAE or Spain - so all in all I work when I've got work and relax when I've got no work

Once you've got school age children | May 30, 2011 |
there's no getting around it any more. They're home for German holidays, regardless of what my clients in other countries are doing...
Depends on the work at hand | May 30, 2011 |

They have no say in determining my work schedule. I don't work on Karfreitag ("Good Friday"). It has always been the highest and most respected holy day to me and my family in Germany and I keep this tradition, even if I happen to live on the other hemisphere now. That's MY way of not allowing the government to determine my schedule.
