Publication par Charles de Montesquieu de son ouvrage fondateur De L’Esprit des Loix, dans lequel il compare les systèmes politiques. Il inspirera les rédacteurs de la Constitution de 1791 et les suivantes.
Voltaire publie Zadig ou La Destinée. Dans ce conte philosophique, il raconte sur un ton ironique l’existence d’un homme sans défaut afin de dresser une satire des institutions et des mœurs du XVIIIe siècle.
Le 6 avril 1748, l’Espagnol Roque Joaquín de Alcubierre, pionnier de l'archéologie, entreprend les premières fouilles à Pompéi. Cette ville avait été détruite par l’éruption du Vésuve intervenue le 24 août 79.
Aux Indes, après la prise par La Bourdonnais et Dupleix de Madras aux Anglais en 1746, ceux-ci assiègent le comptoir français de Pondichéry. La bataille, menée du 28 août au 17 octobre, sera remportée par Dupleix.
Le traité d'Aix-La-Chapelle signé le 28 octobre 1748 met fin à la guerre de succession d'Autriche. Bien que victorieuse, la France renonce à ses conquêtes faisant naître l'expression « travailler pour le roi de Prusse ».

Georges de Buffon débute la rédaction de son Histoire Naturelle. Achevé 40 ans plus tard, cet ouvrage constituera longtemps une référence et inspirera de nombreux naturalistes dont le Britannique Charles Darwin.
Imprimeur de formation et éditeur, l’Américain Benjamin Franklin commence ses recherches et ses expériences sur les phénomènes électriques afin, entre autres, de lutter contre les effets destructeurs de la foudre.
Découverte près de Krasnoïarsk en Sibérie d'une météorite de 680 kg. Elle sera transportée jusqu’à Saint-Pétersbourg en 1772 pour y être étudiée par le zoologiste et biologiste allemand Peter Simon Pallas.
Sous la direction de Jean-Rodolphe Perronet, le Bureau des dessinateurs du Roi créé en 1747 devient le Bureau des élèves des ponts et chaussées. Il sera rebaptisé Ecole royale des ponts et chaussées en 1775.
Décidé en 1748 par le roi Charles-Emmanuel III de Savoie, le creusement du port de Nice débute en 1749 dans le vallon Lympia au pied de l’ancienne citadelle. Ses travaux ne seront véritablement achevés qu’en 1860.

Maurice de Saxe, vainqueur de la bataille de Fontenoy le 11 mai 1745, s'éteint au château de Chambord le 30 novembre 1750 à l'âge de 54 ans. Il est considéré comme l'un des plus grands maréchaux de l'Ancien Régime.

Maurice de Saxe, victor of the Battle of Fontenoy on 11 May 1745, died in the Château de Chambord on 30 November 1750 at the age of 54. He was considered one of the greatest field marshals of the Ancien Régime.
