I have done two comparisons of CAT tools in the past (here and here ).

And now I want to compare CafeTran Espresso 12.1.8 with OmegaT 6.01. OmegaT has many users and fans. Some of them also use CafeTran Espresso, so I asked them: What are the differences? Which tool is better for what? But I never got an answer. So I decided to dive into OmegaT myself.

It makes sense to compare CAT tools. It is not about "who is the winner", because CAT tools are like a religion. Some like it red, others blue. I found it impressive that the DGT of the EU decided to invest in the development of a fork of OmegaT.

So over the next week(s) I'll be writing up my findings on the differences between the two tools. I'll do this in short posts, about a few features, so that others can easily respond to specific topics.

Since OmegaT is new for me, I will need your input. So please correct me where I’m wrong and add the information that I’m missing. Thank you!

Oh! Yes, please. Feb 2

I've been wanting to see something like this. Coming from you, I expect the comparison to be thorough and meaningful.

Looking forward to it, Hanzo-sensei. 👍

I tried OmegaT and couldn't even work out how to get started. Then I discovered CafeTran, which is very intuitive and doesn't require you to read an enormous manual. There is in fact no manual at all for CafeTran (or I've never found one). You just jump in and start translating, and it's very obvious what you have to do. As a Mac user, that's the way I expect any application to work.

In terms of comparing one CAT tool with another, the key thing to remember is that *they all do the same thing* so the only question is "how well do they do it?"
