Microsoft Word documents are probably the most commonly used file type. So it is important how they are handled by the two candidates.

CafeTran Espresso

You can drag an Ms Word document (extension .docx) onto CafeTran Espresso's Dashboard to create a new translation project. Make sure that the Project glossary and Project memory checkboxes are checked and the language combination is set correctly. Then drag the DOCX file onto the Dashboard and you are ready to go. A new glossary and new memory (TM, TMX file) will be created automatically.

CafeTran Espresso displays character formatting in the source segment editor and in the grid (the table with segments):

You can use the toolbar for the target segment editor or the usual keyboard shortcuts (Control+B, Command+I, etc.) to apply character formatting.

OmegaT

Use > Project > New... to create a new project. Change the language codes according to your source and target languages. Click OK. OmegaT will create a new translation memory, but not a new glossary. Click Add Files... and add the files you want to translate. Close the window.

OmegaT doesn't display any character formatting in the source segment editor:

However, as a bonus feature, OmegaT can update the translation project on the fly when you change the source document (press F5). This can come in handy in situations where the source document is changed during the translation process. E.g. with last-minute speeches of "charismatic" politicians.

One minor gripe I had with OmegaT was the language code. By default, Indonesian is designated as id. But the dictionary uses id-ID format. I was confused as to why the spellchecker didn't work, until I read Samuel's post here.

That's exactly what happened to me, since I prepare my projects with "el" for Greek, but Hunspell dictionaries are for "el-GR". So, I tried changing their file names in File Explorer, and it worked. I did not expect this simple and 'unsophisticated' method to do the trick, but it did, as did other simple fixes for little annoyances I came across as a new user of OmegaT.

New glossary only when needed Feb 4

OmegaT will generate "glossary.txt" as soon as you try to add a new term pair to the glossary. Very fast and efficient, without much ceremony as in most other CAT tools.

I just found out that OmegaT doesn't import text boxes, but CafeTran Espresso does.
