Can't find recently used docs in start menu. Initiator des Themas: patyjs

I've just got a new PC, it has Windows XP but for some reason does not have the option to display recently used documents in the start menu. I've opened the task bar/start menu window and gone into properties. I have the option to use the new or classic start menu. Either way, there is no option to display these docs anywhere!
Any ideas?

RieM Vereinigte Staaten Local time: 18:45 Englisch > Japanisch + ... then click "customize" | Jan 10, 2010 |
Hi!
You may have found your way already... anyhow, it's not far from there. Click the Customize (or Custom, I'm looking at the Japanese screen now) to the right, and in the next dialog click the Advanced Tab. Then you will find what you are looking for toward the bottom.

thanks Rie, but I've already tried that. I've been to the customize options on both the new and classic menu options and it's just not there.
Weird! | | |
RieM Vereinigte Staaten Local time: 18:45 Englisch > Japanisch + ... hmm... Is this disabled then? | Jan 10, 2010 |
How weird...
Did this PO have a previous owner? Then, it may have been tweaked in the registry to disable the recent files option. I believe this should be ON by default, out of the box.
Are you comfortable to go to regedit and change settings?

Hi!
this is the location, but if you have erraneously deleted those, then they will not appear. You will have to open them manually.
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Recent

Anyway, I opened the registry and found under explorer - advanced - Start-showrecentdocs
Now what do I do? It has a value of ...00002 (2)

Assuming you have Word 2007 if you open Word NOT "start" you should be at the "home" ribbon. Up in the left hand corner is a little circle with colors in it it. Click on that and it will show two columns. In the left are a qholw series of useful commands such as "save", "save as", etc. In the hand column there will be a list or recently opened documents in descending order. patyjs Mexiko Local time: 16:45 Spanisch > Englisch + ... THEMENSTARTER this is weirder by the minute... | Jan 10, 2010 |
that's what I thought, too, Thomas, but that whole area is blank. I have opened several word docs and some pdfs but it is showing nothing. and yes I do have 2007.
I'm flummoxed and frustrated! It's a really useful option.

Check for style to make sure set for Word 2007. | Jan 11, 2010 |
Are you sure you are set for Words 2007 display rather than the option of earlier displays? (go to home, then change styles, then style set and make sure that Word 2007 rather than Word 2003 is clicked on. Regards, Tom

Sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner! Seems Word behaves in the same way (no Recent file list). The original question was how to show a recent files (including any format) list in the Windows Start menu, right?

As for the Word, you can check a Word Option setting. Just follow this page and you know where to go:
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/01/19/how-to-disable-recent-documents-history-in-office-2007-excel-word-and-powerpoint/
The default value of "Show the number of Recent Documents" is 17.
Anyhow, I strongly recommend that you bring this computer to the shop you bought it and ask for clarification. I'm afraid... if it were a display sample or someone's cancelled order and passed onto you without your knowledge..... You know the protocol!
Regards,
Rie
PS: one of the registry keys in question is:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoRecentDocsHistory
But you may not have it. There are other ways to purge RecentFile list items. ▲ Collapse

It seems that the Windows-XP installaton is not properly configurated.
At the Startmenu:
1) Click "Run..."
2) Write gpedit.msc in the edit box and push the "Accept" button
The group policiy editor will open.
3) Follow the path: User configuration > Templates > Startmenu and toolbar
In the windows at right you will see many options.
4) Double click "Do not keep recently opened documents register" (or something similar)
5) Check the third radio button "Disable"
6) Push the "Apply" and the "Accept" buttons
Go to the next option.
7) Double click "Delete register of recently opened documents when going out (or something similar)
8) Check the third radio button "Disable"
9) Push the "Apply" and the "Accept" buttons
10) Close the group policiy editor and restart your computer.
I am sorry, I do not know the right name of the policies in english as my XP is wiritten in Spanish. If this not worked you should follow the same steps, but cheking the "not configured" radiobuttons this time as this will bring the policies back to its original status. Good luck!

No such luck with the start menu, though. Still, I am eternally grateful.

mmmhhhh, this was intended for the startmenu and not for MS-Word...
However, read carefully the explanation of all the policies related to the startmenu with the group policies editor (now you can how to do) and play with them (but note how they are configured, just in case you should go back to the original status). Configuration changes have no effect until you restart the computer.
