In many countries of the world, students are taking exams this month.
The professor asks the questions and evaluates how well students performed during the year and/or their answers at the exams.
In a university called "Kudoz", the student asks the questions and the student, who did not know the right answer assigns the marks.

But does this electronic world have to be a reverse image of the real world?
Do you know of any university in the world where the students evaluate themselves and grant degrees to themselves?

Sure you mean that... Jun 9, 2003

Most of us aren't students but translators having already spent many years learning and sometimes teaching. Who can say he knows everything in all fields, but we have the necessary knowledge to find the best answer, which may not be the best answer for everybody, but is the right answer for the chooser. I do not believe Kudoz net is made for students, but students use it. There are stupid answers in the Kudoz glossaries but see the number of good things we have at our disposal too.
Thanks

Thanks to all my fellow translators fo all the good (and even bad) answers they have already given to me.

The object of KudoZ is not certfication - it's help and edification.

AND it's much stronger than is generally thought (especially by some self-elected elitist so called experts).

1. The asker normally get several answers to CHOOSE from.
2. The asker normally gets references that can be checked.
3. The asker at any rate gets a suggestion that s/he might be able to compare with his/her own suggestion(s) .
4. The asker normally gets answers from professionals and/or translators with experience and knowledge in the field at hand.
5. The asker normally get an answer within 30 minutes and thus gets time to do some checking before using the suggestion.
6. The asker can, with a probability that grows month by month, rely on an increasing number of answerers being weeded out by natural selection, one of the most potent mechanisms on earth.

No system is perfect but KudoZ, with its open TRACEABLE glossary, free and rich access of answerers is or will definitely be the best internet-based term database in the world.

KudoZ is not a student-to-teacher relationship Jun 9, 2003

KudoZ is a mutual help network among peers.

Points are awarded to the most *helpful* answer. The asker is, prima facie, the best person to judge how helpful an answer was to him or her.

Note that apart from the points, we have peer reviews of answers. When weighted by various factors, these reviews are a useful, but not definitive, indicator of the "absolute correctness" of a suggested translation.

If I quoted ISO-certification, it is because any company obtaining an ISO-certificate complies with a number of predefined standards. It is not the company, who decides whether or not the certificate is granted, but the ISO-office.

I agree with the arguments if the answers are periodically reviewed (as mentioned above) by a small panel of lnguists+specialists and if after proper motiviation points are deduced if after granting the marks, it appears that some answers are totally wrong within the framework of the subject-matter and the target-language, even if all peers agreed to the answer.

KudoZ is a great tool Jun 9, 2003

I would love to see ProZ-generated (internal) separated from non-ProZ-generated (external) questions, with a larger "prize" for the internal ones (say up to 4 points each internal, 1 point each external).

Your "students" would be mostly in the external sector, and you would not expect a pro level in that area.

Besides that, I think KudoZ is a great system. Askers get help and it is amazing how much it reveals about askers, answerer and graders. More than a few job oppor

Clarification of the term student Jun 9, 2003

Please allow me to clarify the term "student" :
I imagine that a last-year student of medicine, who is about to become M.D. has a acquired a sound scientifically based knowledge of medicine.
I imagine that a last-year student of hydraulic engineering, who is about to become engineer and has done his basic two or three years of engineering studies in France for example and the rest in Germany knows more about hydraulics than the German>French translator, who has to look up the term in

With student, I do not mean a high-school kid or a freshman.

If you mean someone who is not a professional translator but needs terminology help, then we are talking about the same thing.
