It exceeds my expectations you don't suspect me of banishing all pleasures.
Limits are hard to keep, I know, but zonyfying of Proz seems wrong to me.

To Jean-Luc: be sure I hate the word hate. However, to hate a debate is quite different from hating somebody.

Closing the thread... staff thoughts Jan 25, 2004

It was I who first instituted the guideline (which is indeed ambiguous by design) four years ago. I'll explain my reasoning...

I am not offended by explicit language. And there are many cases in which professionals can and should discuss it.

However, the hubbub that tends to surround explicit questions was an excessive distraction in the early days of the site's operation (when it was just I running it).

My feeling remains that having the guideline, which moderators enforce on a case-by-case basis, tends to add to the value of the resource rather than detract.

The suggestion has been put forward that there should be a way to distinguish explicit questions, and make them available by choice to those willing to answer them. It is possible this will be implemented in the future.

For the time being, if you have a term that is borderline, explain the situation (within the question) so that moderators will know the scenario. On the other hand, if you have a term that you know will offend others, please use alternative resources or direct contact with willing ProZ.com colleagues to discuss it.
