This seems to be an ongoing problem: people ask KudoZ questions without checking the glossary first. In some cases, the term involved has already been entered a number of times.

This question

was posted today by a person who is not a regular member.
As a result, he may not know that there is a glossary to check.
Given that askers are now requested to tick a box indicating that the question is part of a test/homework or that it may be offensive, can't a box be added with something like "have you checked the glossary?" (providing a link)?
Perhaps there's a way to prevent the question from being posted if the glossary hasn't been checked.
Obviously, this wouldn't work with questions involving context problems or long sentences.
Anyway, it's an idea.
What do you think, folks?

yes, the asker should have to check the glossary Feb 29, 2004

Sometimes moderators intervene to reprimand both askers and answerers for not having checked the glossary first in order to avoid repeat postings of the same term. This seems a good way of both reminding the answerer to check whether the term has already been asked and avoiding embarassment to answerers who only intended to help.

The posted term under the indicated language pair should trigger a search result page Feb 29, 2004

If someone asks about the expression "dead beat" under English to French, and the expression has already been posted under that language pair, then, when the asker hits the "Send Question to KudoZ Answerers" button, the question should not be sent right away. If someone asks about the expression "dead beat" under English to French, and the expression has already been posted under that language pair, then, when the asker hits the "Send Question to KudoZ Answerers" button, the question should not be sent right away. Instead, the question should be interpreted by the KudoZ computer as a KudoZ Glossary search. The results of this search should be presented to the asker. At the bottom of the results page, the asker should be given the opportunity to post the question as a new KudoZ question, despite the previous posting if the previous postings did not quite address the asker's needs. If the asker chooses to do so, the question should not be sent right away. Instead, the asker should be returned to the question entry form so that the asker would have the opportunity to edit the question in order to make sure the question is worded in a manner that would be more likely to elicit the needed answer. Otherwise, the asker may get the same kind of answer that was given before, or worse, receive answers that contain URLs of previous answers (and a reprimand). In other words, the process should follow the following steps:

1. Asker fills the question form.

2. At the bottom of the form, the "Send" button should clearly say "Search the KudoZ Glossary first."

3. A search process is initiated:

A. If the search yields 0 results, the asker is informed, and the following choices are given:

- Edit the question to refine the search

- Post the question as a new KudoZ question.

- Cancel

B. If the search yields one or more answers, the asker should be presented with the results. At the bottom of the result page, the following options should be given:

- The previous answers addressed my needs. Thank you.

- The previous answers did not address my needs. I want to post this quesiton as a new KudoZ question.

- Cancel the query

If the second option is selected, the asker is returned to the question entry form, with the following statement at the top:

"Here is the question that you wish to post. You may wish to edit it to avoid receiving the same answers suggested for the previous postings of this expression."

At the bottom of the page, the asker is given the following options:

- I have edited my question, and I am now satisfied with the way it is worded. Please post it as a new KudoZ question.

- Cancel.

4. The question is posted as a new KudoZ question. If it was posted after an examination of similar postings, the following statement should appear at the bottom of the question in small print:

"Asker has thoroughly examined the answers suggested for previous postings of the same expression. The answers did not address this asker's exact needs, which should be clearly identified in the explanation provided with the question. If such clarification of needs is not provided, the akser will be asked to provide additional notes to clarify the exact needs."

The search logic should not be similar to the "KudoZ Search" logic, where any character string in the expression is interpreted as a possible search entry. The search should only be for exact words.

Enfocing KudoZ search for level Easy Mar 6, 2004

I agree with Fuad that a KudoZ search should be enforced, at least when the question belongs to the Easy level - and defininetly when the asker is a non-member.
However, this would only work if Easy and Pro questions were entered from different pages?
